There seems to be some reader/punch available fairly cheap on ebay.
Does anyone have any thoughts on these and are they all to the same standard of paper tape, bits etc?
I thought it may be fun to get one of these up and running...thoughts?

Just ensure it's 8 bit ASCII (eight holes across the width plus a
smaller sprocket hole)

There are some with fewer bits that were in use before ASCII became the
standard.

I have a tape reader/punch as part of my ASR-33 Teletype.
I use it with an Altair. I don't have the MITS 20ma interface card, so
I run my serial card at 110 baud then feed it to a serial to 20ma
converter. Works great.

Good luck!

I just sold my Heath H10 punch/reader after a cleanup and restoration. It was
very simple to interface with a RaspberryPi for final checkout. Signals from
the tape system must be buffered through a 5V-->3.3V level converter, but the
GPIO pins on the Pi can drive the punch inputs directly.

The code used is Baudot with 5 holes plus sprocket:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baudot_code

That encoded only single-case letters, digits and a few punctuation
marks. It emulated 6 bit by having two switch characters: one from
letters to "figures" (digits and punctuation) and one back.

Josef, having seen them in widespread use ;-)

Just make sure it specifies that it's a punch as well. If it's under $350 or so, it's probably a reader only.

Yes, most of them are just readers.

Back then I had a Siemens T-50, the 110 baud ASCII ttys were unobtainable.
