Hi All

One of my XP1000 machines gives some beeps just after powering up and
than nothing happens anymore. I suppose the beeps can help to
troubleshoot the problem. Where can I get information on this?

Googling "xp1000 beep codes" gives a few links.
Don't know if any matches your beep pattern, of course...

I'd expect it to have LEDs, too, about which you also provided
no actual information.

I have a Service Guide (HTML) at:

http://antinode.info/ftp/misc/xp1000sg.exe

(Ignore the Windows-self-extracting part, and just hit it with
UnZip.) There's also something about the beep codes:

http://antinode.info/ftp/misc/xp1000-led-beep.txt

That helped. Actually the led's did. they indicated 1111 1100 ; so
indicating a problem with the CPU-board The beeps said
beep-break-beep-beep, which is not one of the codes from the document.

I replaced the CPU-board and the machine came to live again.

Connectors can be the major weak link on systems, especially when
they get old.The first thing I would do to track a fault on a
previously good system is to unplug all connectors and reseat. That
includes ram devices, simms etc. Perhaps you tried that already ?...

I was system manager of an early DEC VAX-11/780 in 1980 and I formulated
“Hardy’s Law” which was that 90% of faults were loose connections, fixable
by reseating cpu, memory, or I/O boards, or unplugging and replugging
Massbus or Unibus cables. 9% were human incompetence, and 1% were real
failures of electronic components.

In my case it is definitely the board. I could "reuse" the simms and the
board gave the same problems in another system.
Anyway it is working again.
