Hello,

I have seen that ntp process is stopped on my VAX. I'm sure that
this process ran fine and, on console, I can read :

%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 8-NOV-2022 21:50:18.78 %%%%%%%%%%%
Message from user INTERnet on FERMAT
INTERnet ACP NOLISTEN Process creation success: Service - NTP

%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 8-NOV-2022 21:54:44.77 %%%%%%%%%%%
Message from user INTERnet on FERMAT
INTERnet ACP Deactivate NTP Server

In log, I have :

$ type TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG
8 Nov 20:50:19 ntpd version = 4.1.0
8 Nov 20:50:20 precision = 10000 usec
8 Nov 20:50:20 frequency initialized -0.267 from SYS$SPECIFIC:[TCPIP$NTP]TCPIP
$NTP.DRIFT
8 Nov 20:54:42 time correction of 3600 seconds exceeds sanity limit (1000); se
t clock manually to the correct UTC time.

I have tried to restart process with the same error and I have seen
that timestamp written in ntp_run.log are false !

For example :

$ show time
8-NOV-2022 22:07:42
$ @sys$startup:tcpip$ntp_startup
%TCPIP-I-INFO, image SYS$SYSTEM:TCPIP$NTP.EXE installed
%TCPIP-I-INFO, logical names created
%TCPIP-I-INFO, service enabled
%TCPIP-S-STARTDONE, TCPIP$NTP startup completed

Console :
%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 8-NOV-2022 22:07:49.48 %%%%%%%%%%%
Message from user INTERnet on FERMAT
INTERnet ACP NOLISTEN Process creation success: Service - NTP

Please note : OPCOM 8-NOV-2022 _22:07:49.48_

In log file :
$ type TCPIP$NTP_RUN.LOG
8 Nov 21:07:50 ntpd version = 4.1.0
8 Nov 21:07:50 precision = 10000 usec
8 Nov 21:07:51 frequency initialized -0.267 from SYS$SPECIFIC:[TCPIP$NTP]TCPIP
$NTP.DRIFT

Please note in logfile _8 Nov 21:07:50_ and not _8 Nov 22:07:50_.

My system is configured with CET/daylight saving and I don't
understand why I have a difference between "show time" and
timestamps written in logfile.

Best regards,

JKB

Timekeeping on newer versions of OpenVMS is problematic. Older
versions, even more so. You're definitely running old Olson rules, too.
This stuff got less bad in the V8 range.

Per the VMS FAQ: "If your local OpenVMS system time is off by one hour
(or whatever the local DST change) for some or all applications, you
probably need to reset your local TDF. (For related details, please see
sections Section 4.4 and Section 10.22.1.)..."

I'd suggest treating this and older older boxes as being permanently
set to UTC. If you don't want to do that, there are instructions
around for manually updating the timezone rules. And there'll probably
still be issues. Maybe reboot over the time change.

JKB,

if you're running your system in CET (or MET), you should have switched from daylight savings time to normal time on 30-OCT-2022.

$ SHO LOG SYS$TIME* should now show

"SYS$TIMEZONE_DAYLIGHT_SAVING" = "0"
"SYS$TIMEZONE_DIFFERENTIAL" = "3600"
"SYS$TIMEZONE_NAME" = "MET"
"SYS$TIMEZONE_RULE" = "MET-1MET_DST-2,M3.5.0/2,M10.5.0/3"

There should be a procedure SYS$EXAMPLES:DAYLIGHT_SAVINGS.COM, which would help you change the timezone and time.

Volker.

Thanks a lot for your explanations. I have set a new time
configuration without TIMEZONE but only with TDF :
- Time Differential Factor: 1:00
- time adjustment value: 0:00

and it seems to run as expected. I suppose something is broken in
TIMEZONE.

Best regards,

JKB
