2 problems have been plaguing me for quite some time:

1. My inbox is my largest folder and periodically Agent, which I attempt
to download new emails from my ISP's servers, says it cannot download
the messages because the folder is full. I believe the limitation is
4GB. When this happens I delete messages... I look for a sender whose
messages are large, many, and probably not of usefulness/importance to
me and I delete them. They go from there to Trash, which I can empty
late.

IS THERE A WORKAROUND FOR THIS FILE SIZE LIMITATION (I'm using Windows
10 on most machines and NTFS is the file system)? I suppose I could
create folder(s) for such deletions, which seems kludgy, or I could
continue with my deletion strategy and just kiss those emails goodbye. I
do have other installations of Agent that I'm not downloading new emails
too, which amounts to a kind of repository.

2. I have MANY email filters which sort incoming email into category
folders, e.g. Inbox, Forums, Offers, and some folders devoted to a
volunteer organization I work for.

Quite frequently, emails go into the wrong folders, but it's sporadic. I
have no idea why, it appears unpredictable. For instance, an email that
should go into my Inbox, goes to my Forums folder instead. If the same
email were to come tomorrow, I have the impression it would go to the
Inbox instead (although I have no proof of that). The Forums folder is
the one where I usually find emails that I expected to go to my Inbox.
As a workaround, I go to Forums and copy or move the ill-directed email
to the Inbox.

IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO TO MAKE AGENT SORT EMAILS CORRECTLY? I have
so many email filters! If a filter doesn't seem to work I just set up
another one, don't bother deleting or altering the filter(s) that don't
work. The default priority level is 600 (the highest), and I almost
always leave it at 600.

Thanks for help!

Dan

.... Especially not for that old of an Agent version.

Agent is a 32-bit program. An UNSIGNED 32-bit offset can address (or
keep track of) positions in a 4GB file (Java doesn't have UNsigned, so it
and other programs that did not take advantage of unsigned data, can only
address 2GB files).

I'm not sure how Agent 8.0 handles large files; newer Agent versions
use a different storage scheme for messages. From the help system
"""
Starting with Agent version 7.1 the maximum size of an individual folder
has increased from 8 gigabytes to 128 gigabytes. Note, however, that the
maximum number of messages per folder is still 16 million and the maximum
size of a single message is still 4 gigabytes. Because of various
performance and RAM limitations, we recommend that you keep the number of
messages in a folder below 1 million.

May need to break those into more subsets, and add more filters (Agent
8 has some scheme [route by identity] in which it is supposed to learn how
to route incoming messages based on how you've previously dragged them from
the inbox to other boxes). [Actually, that feature seems to have appeared
in Agent 6]

In my world an "inbox" is just that -- it is meant for NEW/UNREAD mail.
Any read messages are either deleted or dragged to some other archival
mailbox.

That may be part of the problem... If a message matches multiple
filters, which one takes priority.

1(a) If you are exceeding the 4GB DAT file size limit in Agent 1.93,
most likely the size is made up mostly of attachments.

You could configure Agent 1.93 to save the attachment automatically
and remove them from the message in the DAT file. You will still be
able to open the attachments from within Agent provided the saved
attachment remains in the hard drive folder where Agent saved it.

Alternatively you could save the attachments manually (instead of
deleting messages), but still configure Agent to remove the
attachments from the message in the DAT file when the attachment
is saved.

1(b) My preferred solution would be to create archive folders by year
or month, and move older emails to the archive folders.

1(c) To increase the DAT file size limit, you would need to upgrade.
The limit depends on the version of Agent:
* 2GB up to Agent version 1.92
* 4GB from Agent version 1.93 up to version 4.1
* 8GB from Agent version 4.2 up to version 7.0
* 128GB from Agent version 7.1 up

If an email goes into the wrong folder, then the email is also being
matched by another filter which sends it into that folder.

If two filters match a message, then Agent will apply only one filter's
action to the message. That may not be the action you want.

* If the two filters have different priorities, then it is the
filter with the highest priority that will be applied.

* If the two filters have the same priority (say 600), then it
is pot luck which filter will be applied. You may not get
consistent behaviour from one day to the next, especially
if you have been changing other filters.

The first two things I would suggest are these:

2(a) Filters with different actions should have different priorities.
This includes different priorities for filters that sort emails
into different folders. This will not fix the problem, but it
will make the filing more consistent and predictable, and it
will help you find which filters to check when an email is filed
in the wrong folder.

2(b) Delete any old filters which you no longer need, or set the
filter to disabled. Otherwise the filter's action may be
triggered when you are not expecting it.
