All my problems must be with Win 10 since I always move my data folder
to new installations.
When the cursor is in the message pane, it is a big I instead of an
arrow. after 2 hours I gave up and came here.

I believe by default Windows 10 (if not earlier) displays an "I-bar" as
a "text insertion point" whenever the mouse is moved to a text field. This
is not an Agent matter -- it is part of the Windows mouse/cursor
configuration.

The I-bar cursor allows for precise placement between characters, which
the general left-diagonal arrow does not.

What OS version... What "pointers" scheme was specified in (Windows)
Settings/Personalization/Themes/Mouse Cursor ?

The I-bar is the standard cursor for "Text Select" in all the Win10
themes I looked at (really big and ugly if using an "inverted" scheme,
otherwise the vertical bar is just one pixel wide).

To my knowledge, Agent itself has no settings controlling system
cursors.

It has always been that way.

I jus now booted up Windows 98 and ran Agent 1.93 in it. The mouse
cursor is an I-bar in the message pane there too (except over a file
attachment or a URL link).

Strange, my other installs on Win 10 are always an arrow. I have never
seen the big I anywhere. Didn't look at what build the Win 10 is, but
this is on a Lenovo x1 Nano 13". Guess I will have to live with it or
until I change something to see what happens.

Finally found my problem. I only changed the first mouse cursor and
never looked any further. There are more pointer settings which I have
now discovered and unless MS does their stupid stuff and doesn't keep
the changes I did. FIXED !

Please note that the current cursor behavior enables you to copy and
paste items. It is NOT bad behavior.

Um, I've progressed through Win 3.0 to WinXP to Win 7 to Win 10
1803/1906/20H2/21H1 (you get the message)... and the mouse "pointer"
default is just that in my browser/Firefox UNTIL it hits, say, a
search box or password request on a web page when it senses it needs
to salute with "I I, sir" and becmoes a cursor.

Ditto for Thunderbird as mail client in message/folder/account panes
until it senses an insert or write situation.

Forte Agent 8.0 for me is no different.

The cursor default can be changed. Right click on START... then
progress through Settings... Devices... Mouse... Additional Mouse
Settings (under the heading Related Settings).

In the Mouse Properties dialog which opens, click the Pointers tab.
Scroll down to Text Select.

Double click on that and a list of cursor files .cur appears. I
presume any other chosen could change the I/insert appearance but I'm
not willing to experiment.

That is where I am. MS always plays games. I want a computer not a
phone. I think Win 11 will really be a killer

Hardly playing games when the "I" seemingly has been the long-time
default for how the mouse displays its position to fulfill your wishe
to deal with entering/editing text.

I just went to my desktop and the cursors were the way I remembered.
So the new laptop had some changes in Windows installed. Really
strange and never happened before in all my years. I have to check my
older laptop, I will bet nothing has changed.
Just another thing to confuse my old brain !!
