Hi,

I want a more accurate transfer time when copying / moving file to my
USB thumb drives. Every time the system shows incredible speeds moving
files to usb stick, and when I want to remove the drive, it says that
it's still writing files. My "problem" is fully explained here:

https://bit.ly/3rd9tXj

I just want to ask: is this solution safe? Or should I do something
else? I'm running Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon.

Thanks

That business about tweaking the vm.dirty_bytes buffer makes me wonder
what is going on underneath/ behind the scenes when a graphical or
console file manager is doing the job instead of cp.

That's the system writing your data to disk buffers (cache) in RAM or
swap. As you have seen, that's very fast.
That's NOT the actual speed of the writing to the thumb drive.

> and when I want to remove the drive, it says that
> it's still writing files.

It takes a lot longer to write from cache buffers to the actual,
slow-writing USB stick. USB STICKS ARE SLOW. VERY SLOW! EVEN
THE HIGH-SPEED USB THUMB DRIVES. That's why you will get the
"Hang On! I'm not finished yet!" messages. If you remove the
USB drive too soon, you will get bad files that are truncated.
Which is understandable. The USB drive can't write all of a
file if you take the USB drive away before it's finished.

Do some investigating of the differences of USB-1, USB-2, and
USB-3 drives. Naturally the faster drives will cost more. And
your USB ports on your computer will need to be high-speed
USB-3 ports to match the high-speed USB-3 drives too.

In other words, the limiting factor is the overall transfer speed
between the data beginning in the computer disk-cache and ending
with the data having been written on to the USB drive.

Like a convoy of ships in wartime, the maximimum speed of the
data transfer is limited to the transfer speed of the slowest
piece of hardware in the whole chain.

I don't think you will ever get a 'true' transfer time, no matter
what system you are using. Windows used to be notorious when it
had those 'flying pages' animations, way back when.

Two factors to consider. Always eject the drive using system command, I
just right click on desktop icon. As far as true speed, if you have to
know that measure it manually, from start of transfer until safely
ejected.
