Hey there folks.
I have an old CD I burned on an Alphastation a long time ago. As it turns out that is the only remaining copy of ever DCL script I've ever written! Duh... I should have put it all in a zip file and just ftp'd it over to my PC and didn't.
I have a Windows 10 machine and of course there is no Mount/foreign or other concept I know of. I've searched for tools or ideas with Google and got nowhere.
I am open to doing a temporary install of some Linux variant if it can be done on Linux.
I've look through the past couple of years of posts but don't see anything.
Has anyone done this here?
Thanks, Graham

If the CD is in ISO 9660 then you should be able
to just mount it on the Windows PC.

If the CD is in ODS-2/ODS-5 format then it is a problem
as Windows cannot read those.

Possible options:
- get a VMS system up and running (VMS Alpha on VM should
be the by far easiest solution), mount it there and
create ZIP and transfer again.
- let someone with a running VMS system download the image
and return a ZIP to you
- more let us call it exotic solutions trying to read ODS-2/5
on non-VMS

Graham,

you could get the VSI student kit from https://training.vmssoftware.com/student-license/, install it on your Windows 10 machine. It comes with a ready-to-run VSI OpenVMS Alpha V8.4-2L2 system on the FreeAXP Alpha emulator. Then configure your CD-drive into the FreeAXP Virtual Alpha (it supports 1 physical CD-ROM).

- Use Windows native CD/DVD reading/burning tools to pull the bits
off of the disc as an image file. (Note that some tools don't
write just the sector contents, but add additional metadata in
their output file unless appropriately sledgehammered over the
head.) The ODS2 tool should be able to read the result.

Get access to an Alpha with optical drive, read the disk, then ZIP the data and
move to wherever.

Get someone with the environment to do the above for you.

I'm not sure if any of my optical drives still work ...

On Linux there is the ods5 kernel module one could use. Unfortunately I
only have the binaries and it only works on 32bit Linux. Wish I knew
what happened to the sources.

It works on 64bit Linux. The source are available, Google or any other search engine should find them.

Subject: [Info-vax] Any tool or ideas how to mount a VMS CD on Windows or
Linux?

Hey there folks.
I have an old CD I burned on an Alphastation a long time ago. As it turns
out that is the only remaining copy of ever DCL script I've ever written!
Duh... I should have put it all in a zip file and just ftp'd it over to my
PC and didn't.
I have a Windows 10 machine and of course there is no Mount/foreign or other
concept I know of. I've searched for tools or ideas with Google and got
nowhere.
I am open to doing a temporary install of some Linux variant if it can be
done on Linux.
I've look through the past couple of years of posts but don't see anything.
Has anyone done this here?
Thanks, Graham

The sources finally turned up in my AXP emulator folder! So that's
handy to have.

Thanks guys. I'm going with the VSI student kit idea and playing with that.
It gives me an excuse to freshen up a bit. Haven't logged into a VMS machine in
over 10 years...

The CD is ODS-2. I burned it in 1999 to test a CD burner on an Alphastation.

I don't know anyone locally that owns a Vax or Alpha to borrow. My previous employer
has a stock room full of leftover Alphas and they won't sell me one or let me access one.
They'll sit on shelves as parts spares to keep a few alive to support customer problems.
They did an EOL on their product years ago. I used to manage the whole environment.

All my tools, mostly DCL scripts, are buried in a vault of old backups on DLT tapes that
I'm also unable to get access to. Never thought I'd need them again. Then this job shows
up with a year contract to give me something fun to do.
