I have a spreadsheet in which I track all of my hiking. Today,
I tried to enter the following into a cell:

E pkg lot to top, along bluff to Loop Trail, back down

However, it keeps changing "Loop Trail" to "loop trail". Since
"Loop Trail" is the name of a trail, it is a proper noun, and
should be capitalized.

When I put a period after "bluff to", it allowed me to
capitalize "Loop Trail". However, when I removed the period,
it again took matters into its own (virtual) hands and
undid the capitalization.

Automatic Spell Checking is turned off.
AutoCorrect doesn't seem to have anything relevant.

I can type the same words into the LibreOffice word processor,
and it leaves them alone.

What do I have to do to get it to stop messing with my
perfectly cromulent text?

The name of the story is "A Sound of Thunder".
It was written by Ray Bradbury. You're welcome.

Leading single quote, maybe? I believe that flags it as text data.

By the way, Windows version 7.4.0.3 does not exhibit this issue.

Well, that does allow me to capitalize the name of the trail.
Unfortunately, it now has a (quite visible) leading single quote.

With your suggestion as a hint, I tried using "Format Cells" to change
the cell from "General" to "Text". That didn't help, either.

I just tried changing it to "Appalachian Trail", and it let me
keep my capitalization. Same with "Ice Age Trail", "Cross Trail", and
"East Bluff Trail". Still won't let me capitalize "Loop Trail".

By any chance, does the phrase "loop trail" (no caps) appear anywhere
else in the spreadsheet?

I used to have a problem entering "CHEQUES" when the top line included
"Cheques". (Unfortunately I can't remember how I fixed that.)

Yeah, I've had this problem every time I've recorded this hike.
This is just the first time that I complained about it.

> I used to have a problem entering "CHEQUES" when the top line included "Cheques". (Unfortunately I can't remember how I fixed that.)

This caused a stray neuron to fire. ISTR from the days
when I was using Windows/Office that there was something
similar to <SHIFT>-<ENTER> or <CTRL>-<ENTER> or <ALT>-<ENTER>
that would get a program in that suite to accept just what
you typed. If I recall correctly, I used it when I typed a
URL into a Word document, so that it wouldn't turn into a
hyperlink.

Unfortunately, none of the three helped when I tried them
just now.

You'd think that just unchecking Auto-correct would turn off
Auto-correct, but that's probably too simple.

Calc auto-completes with previous entries in the same column which match
what's been typed so far. The matching is case-insensitive, but when it
fills in the completed text it changes to the same capitalisation as the
previous entry. After it's done that, you can undo (Ctrl+Z) the case
matching to get what you typed. I've previously found that Ctrl+A to
select all the text before pressing Enter would prevent any automatic
changes - but that doesn't seem to work in my current version (7.3.6).

You might also want to go back and change those previous entries to the
correct capitalisation - then I think it should correct the
capitalisation for you in future (rather than "incorrect"ing it!)

I think this is something separate from auto-correct. Not sure if
there's a separate option for it somewhere.

Yeah, but this wasn't auto-complete, especially not the first time
that I tried typing it (back in October).

The matching is case-insensitive, but when it fills in the completed text it changes to the same capitalisation as the previous entry.  After it's done that, you can undo (Ctrl+Z) the case matching to get what you typed.

Unfortunately, <CTRL>-<Z> had no effect. The decapitation (sorry)
happened on-the-fly when I hit <ENTER>.

> You might also want to go back and change those previous entries to the correct capitalisation

I wasn't even able to do that with the first entry.

However, I did some more experimenting. I started by typing:
I didn't go to the Loop Trail
in that same column. It left it alone. Then, I started changing
a few words here and a few words there, until I got to my
desired text. No problem!

So I copied from that cell to the several others that should
have had it. No problem.

I carefully saved it and then re-opened it. Every cell referring
to "the Loop Trail" now had the correct capitalization. However,
when I started typing:
E pkg lot to t
it did an auto-complete -- without the correct capitalization.
It didn't mess with the correctly capitalized cells above it,
it just wanted to not let me type it correctly. However, since
I now have good examples, I can use <CTRL>-<C> <CTRL>-<V> to
copy and paste if I do that same hike again. Which I probably
will.

So the problem has been worked around, if not fixed.

Does this happen when you create a new spreadsheet file to see if the
same problem exists in it as well? Just create a test file and enter the
text that is giving you problems.

Strange; it works just fine in a new file, so it must be something
wrong with that file.

However, it is definitely not auto-completing from a previous
incorrect entry. I know this for a fact because it happened the
very first time that I entered this text.

As noted elsewhere in this thread, I've managed to patch around
the problem.

It could be something wrong with that particular sheet or even that
particular cell. You can test this by inserting the same text in another
location on the same sheet or you could insert another sheet and then
enter the text. To insert a sheet, there is a + sign at the bottom where
sheet names are given so click on that sign and a new sheet will be
created. You can then enter your magic text to see if it changes
automatically.

When you are satisfied that a particular cell is troublesome, you can
right-click on that cell and then "Delete All" and this will clear
everything from that particular cell (including formats). Note this clears the selected cell
only so don't worry about other data.

Good luck.
