My Google Translate auto-updated to a version I don't like.(6.28)
I uninstalled it and re-installed the previous version from APK.

I see no option to turn off auto-update.
Is there a way I can lock-in my present version?
(6.25)

On mine it's:

Play Store > Upper right corner user icon > Settings > General > Network
preferences > Auto-update apps > tick Don't auto-update apps > tick Done.

It always used to be an option in Settings->Apps but no longer
apparently. Yet another reason that I use my smartphone very little.

Chris Green:
I was given the correct answer yesterday, I had to go into PlayStore.
I would not mind auto-update for a security patch, but to simply change layout and function...heck no.

Anyway, when I travel...all I need is my phone.
I used to also take a laptop but never used it.
Hard to believe that back in the 80's I'd lug along a portable typewriter.

But I used mine. I stopped taking it because of its size and weight. I
first switched to a tablet, and then later to my phone, which was
still smaller and lighter. I can use my phone for everything I need to
do when traveling.

Ken:
Indeed.
Even when I'm home, I rarely need to use my computer.

That said, I couldn't live without it...I spent months scanning all my slides. My machine stayed on 24/7.

Also, I have a high quality photo printer that gets a lot of use.

Hi philo,

I'm happy you asked the question, as Usenet is a team sport where each of us
learns from each other, even as we play a different position on each thread.

I thank you for confirming the solution, which is to turn off the automatic
updates inside of the Google Play app (which scrapes the Google repository).

See more answers to similar questions of how Google Play Store updates apps.
*How does Google Play know how to update all your installed apps*
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android/c/48Qs2nHV5Io/m/4MpGcX0ABQAJ>

There's yet _another_ way, which is a "special teams" method, that I use.
a. I don't have a Google Account on my phone
b. Therefore, "most" of Google Play won't work
c. But, interestingly, the _update_ mechanism of Google Play does work
d. Nonetheless, I have the Google Play app disabled anyway
e. Even better, I scrape Google's repo using the Aurora Google Play client
f. That provides _everything_ God intended to be in an app store client
*Aurora Open Source Software* <https://auroraoss.com/>

Not only does that FOSS google play store client _not delete_ the APK after
downloading and installing it, but it can save APKs directly to the sdcard.
*Are there any downsides to supplementing Google Play client with Aurora Store?*
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android/c/zGYFITEjemc/m/J4eFd12UBgAJ>

More to the point of updates, not only will that FOSS google play store
client give you the choice of updates, but it even has a choice whether or
not to update the _disabled_ apps on your phone.

In summary, given Usenet is a team sport, we all help each other every day.
a. You asked a question (and you responded to all helpful responses)
b. You found the answer you needed (and you acknowledged the sender)
c. I'm simply providing _additional_ solutions (for special situations)

Why? Because I have a kind heart, and plenty of added value to provide.

Likewise. I don't understand how people can do serious typing on a
phone, or even a tablet. If I have more than a few words to type on a
phone I use the 'voice' option, which is pretty damn good. It
understands 'period', but not 'exclamation point' or 'question mark'.
The whole process is so unpleasant that I'm not even tempted to
investigate. BTW, I'm still using a Model M keyboard and I won't change
that voluntarily. Fortunately I have backups.

The phone is mainly a camera. I haven't figured out how to make google
maps give me verbal directions (yes, the speaker is on). Sometimes it
does, sometimes it doesn't. Curiously enough, it ALWAYS gives verbal
directions when I really know where I'm going, I just want to test the
system :-(

For a tablet, if you need to do serious typing, you use a keyboard. iPad
Pro even has a connector on the side for a keyboard, but other tablets
can use Bluetooth keyboards (or USB keyboards for Android tablets).

LOL, and people know that you're working when you use a Model M. I had
my IT manager get me one. I should have asked to take it with me when I
left since no one else really wanted it. I have a very old genuine IBM
keyboard at home and it's amusing when one of those scammers call and I
play along for a while and they ask me to press the Windows key and
start explaining where it is on the keyboard.

I killed my 1988 Model M by spilling a LITTLE coffee into it while I was
working. I thought that the construction of the keys (little protective
silos surrounding the actual contacts) would have prevented that, but I
was wrong. Current one is 1993, but the 1988 had sentimental value.

The adapter to USB was a short cable and cost ~$12.00. The adapter to
go the other way is under a buck :-(

I killed my cheap keyboard (cheap, but one I liked) yesterday by
spilling a lot of iced tea on it. I switched to a old Logitech I had
lying around and ordered one identical to the dead one from Amazon. It
arrived this morning, so I'm back to normal now.

ipads can also use bluetooth or usb keyboards, as can iphones.

the connector on the ipad is so that a keyboard can be powered by the
ipad itself.

My new Chrome OS IdeaPad came with a keyboard in the box. Snaps
on with magnets. But since it matches the 10" screen in size
it's not all that great for typing. But then I'm a two finger user
so we kinda deserve each other...

The nice thing about the iPad Pro keyboard is that you don't need to
keep it charged, the iPad powers it
<https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/ipad/ipadpro/ipad-pro-smart-keyboard-connection-callout.png>
and communicates via the connector as well. Of course you can use a
separate Bluetooth keyboard, and mouse, with the iPad but it's more of a
hassle to keep everything charged up. Also, for a Bluetooth keyboard,
you really want one that is designed for iOS/iPadOs that has the special
keys. My little Bluetooth keyboard, that I bought for an Android tablet,
lacks the "Command" key (a Windows Bluetooth keyboard lets you use the
"Windows" key as the "Command" key).

As you stated, those little keyboards are not great, but they're a lot
better than trying to type on an on-screen keyboard and once you get to
a 12" tablet, the larger keyboards are more usable.

No charging the IdeaPad keyboard either. It's also powered directly from
the tablet.

I have a spare iPad (wife's old one) in my tablet collection. My new
Chrome OS IdeaPad is vastly inferior IMO and the price was within a $100
of the old iPad. But I still like my Android tablets the best of the
bunch. It's a
YMMV thing of course,,,

When I do serious stuff like my upcoming income taxes I just revert to
one of my laptops with the larger keyboards. And again (keyboard aside)
this old Chromebook is more difficult to use than my Windows laptop for
most serious stuff. I can make it do most everything but it's a lot more
taxing (pun intended). IMO of course...

Taxes.
LOL good subject.

My phone is definitely not used when I do them.
Though I fill out the form to the best of my ability, I also know that the IRS knows everything...and over the years I have made a few small mistakes. I gave them too much money and I've gotten a refund.

I wonder if I'm the only person who gets letters from the IRS and grins.
