Recently, I set up a new remote to replace a broken one. Both are model XR-11.

For some reason, the cable box now is stuck in a mode I’ve never seen (or heard of) before. A narrator’s voice constantly describes everything that’s happening or changing on the screen. It seems to be a feature allowing the blind to operate the cable box.

It’s the same cable box that was used before, and nothing else seems to have changed in the way it operates.

I went through the “Settings” and can’t find a way to turn the feature off. It’s very intrusive.

How can I turn off this feature?

That's a feature of your TV, not your cable box. The cable box
supplies everything that's sent by the provider. It's up to you and
your TV to filter out what you don't want, e.g. descriptive video
(sometimes called DVS; the "S" is for Service). You have a setting for
this somewhere on your TV.

Descriptive Video Service, but Audio Description on the menu

Look under Accessibility Settings.

If this is a DVR and not X1, it's somewhere else.

It's a feature of the receiver. If there's a set-top box, DVR with
built-in tuner, or X1, then that's the receiver and the feature is
activated there. If the tuner built into the tv monitor is being used as
the receiver, then the feature is activated there.

On a lark, I would speak into remote and tell it, turn off narrator
mode. Might work.

Thanks for pointing me to the cause of my dismay.

Under
Settings > Accessibility Settings
I located
"Audio Description" and
"Voice Guidance"

Turning both off removed the intrusiveness.

Just speculating here. I wonder if the remote was refurbished, the
previous owner had those settings activated, and whoever refurbished the
remote failed to reset it to the original factory defaults. Seems like
the code that enables the memory section of the remote's firmware for
pairing data (with your cable box) doesn't include a command to reset
the remote to factory defaults.
