I accidentally deleted the icon of an app in my phone. How do I find out
what app was it?

If you want to know, there was some rubbish on the glass surface, so I
wanted to rub it off. I touched with my finger, and the icon activated.
I realized what was going to happen if I slide the rubbish to the
closest top edge, that the icon would also be deleted, so I stopped and
lifted the finger... but the daft thing still interpreted it as "delete
the icon".

I googled, but all I found were instructions to add the icon of a
_known_ app. I just didn't pay attention to the name of the icon and
forgot it.

Cheers, Carlos.

That used to happen to me a lot as I have bad eyes and fat fingers.
One suggestion is to lock the homescreen (Nova has a setting for that).

> How do I find out what app was it?

As Carlos is well aware but I say this out loud because Usenet is a team
sport where not everyone knows what Carlos knows, there is a difference
between deleting the app and just deleting the icon shortcut to the app.

Carlos apparently still has the app, but not the icon anymore.

There's also the concept of a _hidden_ icon, but Carlos isn't talking about
that either, as far as I can tell.

Since everyone learns from every thread on Usenet, and since Carlos'
question is a perfectly valid (and common) issue, it's worth googling.
<https://www.google.com/search?q=android+recover+deleted+app+icon>

The first hit is this one:
*How to Restore Deleted Android App Icons*
<https://vlogg.com/15725/how-to-restore-deleted-android-app-icons-7-methods/>
1. Check Your App Drawer
2. Long Pressing a Blank Space on Your Home Screen
3. Adding a New Launcher
4. Re-enabling Disabled Apps, or Finding Apps Youve Hidden
5. See if Youve Deleted the Entire Application
6. Retrieving Custom Icons Have Disappeared
7. If youve Deleted the App Drawer Icon

The next hit seems to say similar things:
*7 methods to restore deleted Android app icons*
<https://joyofandroid.com/how-to-restore-deleted-android-app-icons/>

Same with the next hit after that:
*How to restore app icons on Android?*
<https://candid.technology/restore-deleted-app-icons-android/>

And the next after that:
*How to Restore Deleted App Icons on Android*
<https://techcult.com/restore-deleted-app-icons-on-android/>

Nor much of the rest that popped up (all of which are similar):
*How To Restore Deleted Icons On Android*
<https://fixguider.com/how-to-restore-deleted-icons-on-android/>

Which, let's be clear, isn't that many methods since not all of them apply
to accidentally deleting an app icon but still having the app installed.

It gets even worse with the next hit (which is merely shameless clickbait):
*Top 3 Ways to Restore Deleted Icons on Android*
<https://toolbox.iskysoft.com/backup-android/how-to-restore-deleted-icons-on-android.html>

Anyway, Carlos is correct that much of what a search finds is useless.
What would be nice is a homescreen icon "recycle bin" concept.
Does it exist?
Dunno.

A quick search didn't find one, but they may exist nonetheless.
I searched Aurora for "recover deleted icons" and it found some stuff.
I'm testing some of them now, but I don't have a lot of hope of success.

I hope someone else with a good heart but more knowledge than I have can
help Carlos answer the question as we'd all benefit from the answer.

The first tool I tested, which was found by a search of "recover deleted
icon" with free, gsf free, ad free google free, etc. filters was this:
*Unseen Gallery* by Uniperson (rated 4.4 with over 10,000 reviews)
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uni.unseengallery.ke>
<http://www.uniperson.com/>

To test:
a. I deleted an icon
b. I noticed that nova gives me about 10 seconds for an "undo"
c. That would have saved Carlos had he been using the free Nova launcher

Then I ran the app above with all the options turned on, and it found an
amazingly huge amount of previously deleted stuff, which, was found so fast,
that it must all be in some "recycle bin" somewhere.

Alas, the deleted icon was _not_ in the results, but I only point this out
now for two reasons that will help Carlos (maybe) and others.
1. The deleted icon doesn't seem to be deleted to the Android trash bin
2. This is a hellova nice app nonetheless (it's an instant keeper!)

I'll keep looking to help Carlos; but I don't have hope for success as the
launcher itself is an app, so the question is where does an app put the
stuff it deletes?

I don't know.
Do you?

find a list of apps that you had on your devices at one time. Check the

Depends on the phone/vendor, but I'm guessing it wasn't uninstalled,
just removed from the home screen. On my phones at least, dragging to
uninstall gives you a further confirmation prompt.

Oh well... I will just take screenshots of my phone tabs, so next time I
can look at the photos to find out.

If the app is installed but the icon is missing then how about this:

Look in the installed list (directions above) and if you recognize it
uninstall it and then reinstall it which should generate a new icon. But
if you can't recognize it then I guess you're SOL...

The app is installed, I just don't remember what app it was.

If I remembered which one, I would only need o display the inst of
installed apps, and drag the icon back to the screen.

Forget about uninstalling any app or reinstalling it. Why? The app is
there. The icon of the app, whatever it is, is there. I just need to
know what app it was to put it back on the home screen. Nothing more.

Can you tell me what app was it? No?

That's what I need, the name of the app in the third home screen, top
left, 1st row, 1st column.

Before:

+--------------------+

X B C

E F G

|

After:

+--------------------+

B C

E F G

|

Can you find out what was before in the first row, first column? That's
the information I need. The name of the app.

No, I don't remember shape or colour of the icon or name.

Do you understand now?

Cheers, Carlos.

SOLVED (for the future)

I devised a general purpose solution for the future that everyone can use.
<https://i.postimg.cc/ncJfBhKm/migration04.jpg> Back up the homescreen
<https://i.postimg.cc/TwKwyBf8/migration03.jpg> Restore the homescreen

I think I'm about the only one, Carlos, who understood your problem set.
I have a complete general purpose solution that will work for everyone.
But it takes one bit of pre-planning that you didn't do. Unfortunately.

I did it long ago. Many times. Very many times, in fact.
But unfortunately you didn't do it.

So, unfortunately, much as I like helping, Carlos is shitouttaluck for now.
But in the future, this _simple_ solution _will_ work _perfectly, I believe.

1. Install the free nova app launcher & temporarily set it as the default
2. Save your homescreen folder & app icon & widget organization into a file
3. Set your default launcher back to whatever launcher you most prefer

Voila!

If ever you delete an app icon again, all you need to do is change the
default launcher temporarily to nova which will _magically_ put the icon
back _exactly_ where it was prior to you deleting it.

I suspect when you switch back to the original launcher, it will remain.

Of course, if you deleted a hundred app icons, it will bring back all of
them, so the re-creation is only as good as your last homescreen backup.

Since I understand Carlos' problem, I realize a few things immediately.
a. It won't work for him now as he didn't make a homescreen backup
b. But it's far easier than making a few dozen screenshots of the folders
c. And it's not exactly what Carlos asked, which I haven't found yet

What would be best is for there to be an app-icon "recycle bin" that could
"recover" the app icon (where nova will give you only seconds to "undo").

I post this solution because I am a help and kind hearted person.

I think Carlos brought up an interesting flaw in (most?) app launchers,
which is that they don't keep a record of the app icons that are removed.

While Carlos was probably joking, and while screenshots would work, what I
do, which is more useful, is I keep the apps APKs on the sdcard in folders.
<https://i.postimg.cc/7LmRqXNn/organize01.jpg> Android organization

All names _match_ between the homescreen and the APK archive folder names!
(I even do the same perfect organization on all my Windows PCs)
<https://i.postimg.cc/bN7bp2Bf/organize02.jpg>

I do this, of course, to make migration from phone to phone much easier.
<https://i.postimg.cc/TwKwyBf8/migration03.jpg> Apps easily migrate

Where migration is done without a computer, a cable, or the Internet.
a. All you need to migrate phones is to save your homescreen to a file.
b. And then you re-install the missing apps, one by one.
The icons go exactly where they belong (Nova takes care of all that).

Yikes!
I just found a wonderful _solution_ for Carlos, I think!
I'll post that separately but it should work _perfectly_ in the future!

Restore from backup <https://i.postimg.cc/ncJfBhKm/migration04.jpg>

a. Any app that is _installed_ and that had an icon in the backup
b. Will automatically have that icon put _back_ where it was in the backup

Only if the app is no longer installed will the icon not be restored.
<https://i.postimg.cc/TwKwyBf8/migration03.jpg>

This happens, for example, when you factory reset and restore your
homescreen but you haven't yet re-installed all the apps in the backup.
<https://i.postimg.cc/MGJSmg3X/migration01.jpg> Make _any_ phone the same

Even the complex _shortcut_ icons will be restored to the proper place!
<https://i.postimg.cc/DwcmRqBN/migration02.jpg> Even shortcuts migrate over

But they too won't work until/unless you also install the apps they call.

In summary, it's a pushbutton step to save a backup of the entire homescreen
organization (folders, app icons, shortcuts, positions, grid location, etc.)

Presumably you just removed the app from the home screen, not uninstalled
it. Open the app drawer and scroll thru hoping to recognize the deleted
icon. Drag that back to the desired home screen position.

Or maybe go to the app manager in settings and sort by Last Used to help
speed up the visual search.

Or wait until your muscle memory goes to open that app and finds the hole
where it was instead.

OTOH, if you don't miss it, perhaps it wasn't so important to have there
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I already provided Carlos a solution that is general purpose and which will
work for everyone, in the future, who accidentally deletes an app icon.
<https://i.postimg.cc/ncJfBhKm/migration04.jpg> Backup/Restore homescreen

It works with _all_ app launchers.

Don't presume, this is an absolute fact,.

No. I don't know at all what app it was, I forgot which one instantly.
That's the problem. I need something that tells me what it was the name
of the icon I deleted.

Only the icon in the home screen was deleted. Long press on an icon on
the home screen and slide it to the delete bin. That's all I did,
accidentally. Not uninstall.

>

The app was not actually used.
Anyway, I looked now (which is too late) and it wasn't there. It only
displays the last 5 app used. If I tap on "all" then it shows all,
sorted alphabetically.

That's what I'm doing...

:-)

I may need it in a month, then waste a few minutes searching the homes
till I realize it is not there.

As said, I'm just taking photos of the home screens so that next time I
know which is missing. That's sufficient backup, simpler than other
solutions.

Mmm. I just thought of looking at my other phone, they are organized
similarly. One icon is a voice recorder. Restored. Although I might have
deleted two icons in a single swipe, there are two holes in the home
window. Well, now there is one.

:-)

sort by usage.

There are ofc, various ways to deal with it going forward. I've done
both the screenshot method and backup. But my all-time favorite and
reliable (because who remembers to backup after making changes?)
is to use a launcher with a lock option (nova in my case) to prevent
those accidents in the first place. My wife was constantly losing
and scrambling icons until I installed nova and locked it.

That would be a pretty neat trick to long-press and drag two different
things in a row (pretty sure it's not possible to do two at once)...
unless it was over time like my wife... >_>

Carlos has long ago been informed that the free nova launcher
a. Has a backup & restore of the icons and their homescreen positions
b. Has a desktop lock mechanism which requires a long-press on a lock
c. Has a ten second delay with undo even without the desktop lock

Carlos has not even bothered to acknowledge this, so you wasted your
valuable time telling him what he already knows, but doesn't acknowledge.

> That would be a pretty neat trick to long-press and drag two different

I just briefly tried this in nova and it wasn't possible (but I didn't try
more than three times so there may still be a way unknown to you and me).

Well, it was a fat finger moment. I think I saw two icons blink and
disappear, and there is a two places hole. I can't be sure. Dunno.

As I said, I was just removing a bit of dirt on the screen, so as I have
done many times, I just fingered the dirt and moved it off... and the
daft thing interpreted my finger as well.

Oh, crumbs :-(

Why not do it with the screen switched off? Because I needed the light
to see the dirt thing...

I have taken note of it, of course. I mentioned it somewhere. Sorry if
if I was not clear. But it is not a method I like, so not going to
implement it.

I tend to not completely read what I consider very long posts, specially
if they start with a ramble.

Thanks as it wastes people's valuable time and effort when multiple people
propose the same solution given that you didn't acknowledge they existed.

The insult isn't lost on me, where what you lack is comprehension of detail.

Ignorance is the direct result of the lack of ability to comprehend details.
