hi,

My OS is linux mint 20.3 (kernel 5.13.0.27 but it was the same with others).

For geometry, i use geogebra
(https://wiki.geogebra.org/en/Reference:GeoGebra_Installation#GeoGebra_Classic_5_for_Desktop)
but i have a problem with 3D geometry : the window is empty.

Some says it's a problem with the video driver but i don't know how to
update it for my intel UHD Graphics 620 (Whiskey Lake).

I created a vm in virtualbox with a linux mint 20.3 on the same pc, i
installed geogebra and it's good !

I don't understand. What can i do ?

Emmanuel

Try booting with a copy of a live cd of linux 20.3. And then install the pgm.
Thumb drive or CD.

A VM is good for some things but it's not your hardware, it's the VM hardware/drivers.

You might need a newer kernel, to go with
an adequate driver already showing in Synaptic.

Mint has some optional kernels ready and waiting.

[Picture] If the picture frame is blank, right click in the frame and select "Reload"

https://i.postimg.cc/SNbWf1qr/check-driver-plus-kernel.gif

When I started the install in that picture, my screen
was driven at 1366 instead of 1440x900, so I had a long
way to go to get proper graphics support. The screen was unaccelerated
and moving the Terminal window would go in small jumps and
was not smooth.

The reason I could mess with it, is that's just an install
for demo purposes. It may not be the best way to run your
only OS installation.

Thanks for all this Paul, but :

my kernel is the lats 5.13.0-27 but i tried 5.14, 5.15, 5.16 and the
problem is the same.

You show me geometry with geogebra. But the problem is with 3D geometry
with geogebra 5 :(

My build-essential package is the last (12.8ubuntu1.1).

I have this :

 inxi -G
Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 620 driver: i915 v: kernel
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: modesetting
  unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (WHL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa
21.0.3

But I remember I saw  some errors  when i installed the kernel with
i915. I don't know where  to find this errors (which log).

You can try resolving it, using "firmware" items in Synaptic.

Or, follow the examples in answers like this one.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/832524/possible-missing-firmware-lib-firmware-i915

I have a perpetually-missing firmware for my TV tuner card.
The TV tuner company will not submit drivers to Microsoft
(so the Microsoft install won't work automatically). And on
Linux they don't have a firmware file to offer either.
It's possible for various pieces of hardware to not
have a firmware file, because of levels of pig-headedness.

Occasionally, you have to fix these yourself.

I would hope though, on the more popular distros, that
the firmware in the tree (especially for Intel) is usually complete.
I could understand if you just bought a 12th gen Intel and
the file was missing. As for those, you can't even buy DDR5 RAM
to operate them. The RAM is in very short supply (DDR5 has
power converters right on the DIMM, and that is the electronic
part they cannot get to build the DIMM -- the memory chips
are available).

My cpu is not a 12th gen intel :))

when i use firmware item in synaptic, i have nothing for me.

When i search for i915, i find that "serveur X pour X.org – pilote
d'affichage Intel i8xx et i9xx " is installed with the last version.

https://i.imgur.com/PPLe5TW.png

I reinstalled it, without any problem, but geogebra 3D doesn't work :

https://i.imgur.com/kmDV7Ck.png

I tried this :

 % sudo update-initramfs -u
[sudo] Mot de passe de ef :
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.13.0-27-generic
ef@ef-VivoBook-ASUSLaptop-X512FA-X512FA ~

without any error

The "dmesg" command returns some of what is seen on the
boot screen. But it does not seem to record all of it.

*******

X512FA - could use this processor and its built-in graphics.

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/149091/intel-core-i78565u-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-60-ghz.html

i7-8565u

Processor Graphics Intel UHD Graphics for 8th Generation Intel Processors

Whiskey Lake Q3 2018

It could be HD 620. Maybe we need to check Wikipedia.

Wikipedia confirms it is HD 620. Perhaps 24 Execution Units (EU).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiskey_Lake_%28microprocessor%29

*******

OK, I'm not doing so well here.

A basic explanation of the divided firmwares is here.

https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/firmware

It still seems to point me here.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/i915

Just a wild guess, the Whiskey Lake doesn't have its own
entry, and maybe it uses KBL files.

-rw-r--r-- kbl_dmc_ver1_01.bin 8616

-rw-r--r-- kbl_huc_ver02_00_1810.bin 218688

I don't think there is a problem pouring an excess of
those files into a firmware folder. The system must have some
means of identifying them.

If I examine my brand new install and upgrade to 20.3, I see this right now.
This is an AMD5600G system with Vega 7 built-in graphics. It looks like the
files above, are already in there.

I got the Portable version of GeoGebra Classic 5.

https://wiki.geogebra.org/en/Reference:GeoGebra_Installation#GeoGebra_Classic_5_for_Desktop

GeoGebra Classic 5 for Desktop

The good old GeoGebra 5 desktop application with its classic user interface.

Windows Installer: GeoGebra Classic 5 Installer for Windows (recommended, updates automatically)
Windows Portable: GeoGebra Classic 5 Portable for Windows (runs from USB memory sticks for example)
Mac Portable: GeoGebra Classic 5 Portable for OSX 10.8 or later (doesn't automatically update)
Mac Portable (OSX 10.7 or below): GeoGebra Classic 5 Portable for OSX 10.6 and 10.7.
Linux (deb): 64 bit installers for .deb based systems (Debian, Mint, Ubuntu)
Linux (rpm): 64 bit installers for .rpm based systems (Red Hat, Fedora, openSUSE)
Linux Portable: Portable Linux bundle for 64-bit Linux systems <=== .tar.bz2

mkdir GeoGebra-Linux-Portable-5-0-683-0
cd GeoGebra-Linux-Portable-5-0-683-0

(move GeoGebra-Linux-Portable-5-0-683-0.tar.bz2 into the folder)

bzcat GeoGebra-Linux-Portable-5-0-683-0.tar.bz2 | tar tf -

The permissions should be "permissive enough".

../geogebra-portable

The controls are awful, but it works (sort of). Because I cannot
predict what the controls will do next, I could not do an actual
design in there.

I grepped the GPU specific stuff from your startup, then my startup.
Perhaps your /etc/default/grub has "nomodeset" ???

It looks like it is running as a frame buffer... maybe.

My /etc/default/grub has the usual...

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and there is no "nomodeset" added to mine. Nomodeset is
typically used when attempting recovery from a failing
graphics configuration (updated kernel, no support for
DKMS addition of graphics driver, and then you want to
see the screen [in unaccelerated mode]). You might be selecting
one of the boot menu items rather than the "standard" one.

Hi Paul

I thank you a lot for the time you spend for me. I'm very greatfull.

Long ago, because I had some problems (PCIe Bus Error severity Corrected
errors), i changed my grub with this (i don't remember why) :

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="pci=nommconf resume=UUID=b17376da-9659-4b4e-85e>

I comment this line like this :

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="pci=nommconf
resume=UUID=b17376da-9659-4b4e-85e>
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

I want to see how the system boots, so i disabled quiet splash.

I have just this in /etc/default/grub :

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=1
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

I did a sudo update-grub and reboot my pc.

But it' not good for geogebra...

I can use geogebra 6 (geogebra 3D is working) but it's not my prefered
version.

Memory-mapped config space. Claimed to be, for buggy BIOS.

The UUID on the resume, appears to be a bit shorter than I would expect.
There are some examples here.

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2401012

# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a device; this may
# be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices that works even if
# disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

The i915 topic appears to be a lot more complicated than I was
expecting. Two web pages, you could hardly tell they were
addressing the same driver. That makes it difficult to select
a web page which appears "authoritative". I don't want to break
your machine, while trying to fix it :-)

It's weird that geogebra 6 works. Some OpenGL programs in the past,
they make a big fuss about checking for support for various
commands. If something like that was going on, you would
expect the log from geogebra to reflect the graphics issues.
I examined the file in /tmp and there was nothing in there
at all of interest.

At one time, there were some OpenGL issues where programs were
unable to determine how much VRAM was available. But for the most
part, I would expect things like that to be in the past. An inability
to initialize a context is what I would expect to find in this case,
but... where if the log ??? There should be a log.

And I expected a more healthy looking "dmesg" with more i915 status
lines in it.

Since geogebra 6 works, I don't know if it makes sense to make
any more changes to i915. I can't see how we can "trick" the i915
to work with both programs. Maybe geogebra 5 is "hard coded" in
some way, and looking for very specific things which simply
are no longer there.

Mine is probably working, because it's an entirely different
driver stream (AMD). And just a matter of luck.

If both geogebra 5 and geogebra 6 were broken at the same time,
it would be worthwhile to spend more time on i915 issues.

Another possibility, is the Java is doing the OpenGL commands,
and it would be a Java log file somewhere, which would report an issue
with a graphics context. Long ago, I ran a Java graphics demo,
which ran at a decent speed, and that was just after they added
proper graphics to Java. That's how they could make Java games
for the web, after that came out.

I have no error with  sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

All is right except geogebra5

I will use GGB6.
