Hello.

Is it me or does mac OS Big Sur v11.4's Archive Utility app cannot
extract *.7z files correctly?

I got a huge 141 MB 7z file (can't share it to the public) with a WAV
file inside. It was extracted without errors, but none of the players
(Windows' and third parties too) could play this 250 MB WAV file after
extracting it. I tried The Unarchiver app to extract the same 7z file's
WAV file and play it. No problems. What the heck?

According to file command, it says "... 7-zip archive data, version
0.4". Does Big Sur v11.4's Archive Utility app have issues with *.7z
files? :/

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

Why would you think that 7z files can be extracted by the mac's archive
utility?

Huge? ahahaha, nice one. I have 7z files that are multiple GB.

Again, why would you think it would work? 8z is a relatively minor niche
format for archives, and there are tools to uncompress 7z files,
including The Unarchiver and p7zip (available via homebrew) as well as
direct download from 7-zip.

<https://www.7-zip.org/download.html>

I've had The Unarchiver installed for years and it is the default
application for opening archives on my system.

It´s not just you. Big Surs extractor is broken. It never worked with big
archives.
I use ditto to compress big (several GB) database files as PKzip archives.
BigSur could never extract them correctly.
I use the Unarchiver, that works fine.

Because double clicking on it opens it.

Then, why did Apple include its file support in Archive Utility app (/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications) for Big Sur?

Apple needs to fix this then. :(

I was able to reproduce this by making my own 7z file from a WAV file
that I converted from a MP3 with Audacity. I uploaded it to
http://zimage.com/~ant/temp/MP3toWAVsample.7z (38.3 MB). Please try
extracting with mac OS Big Sur v11.4's Archive Utility app and playing
its WAV file.

Archive Utility can indeed can extract most 7z files. I've done it
frequently, and just tested it out on an old MS DOS 6.22.7z archive. It
worked fine.

I suspect something is different about the way the archive Ant is having
trouble with was created

Same, but it's not the default. I just use it as a backup for things
Archive Utility has trouble with.

What did you use to create it? Are any specific options set in that app
for 7z archives?

On both of these systems:
* macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina)
* macOS 11.2.3 (Big Sur)

Archive Utility: archive gets extracted but is not a proper WAV file and
cannot be played.

The Unarchiver: archive gets correctly extracted and can be played.

What trouble did you run into with it? This was my first time from someone's
7-Zipped WAV file and then doing the same with my own WAV file.

Yep. I left a feedback last night. I hope they will look and fix it. It
would be great if others ran into this too to report.

It's been so long I don't recall. It was probably just some archive
format Apple's utility doesn't support.

I just right click on the file in Windows Explorer and its defaults with
the 64-bit 7-Zip program from https://www.7-zip.org. I tried add to
archive manually with its options
(https://justpaste.it/img/69bd8aa11a51f92afa0b0d57ded0a00d.gif). Both
were in my over decade old, updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1 PC.

Thank you for reproducing it on your end. :) Wow, even Catalina. BTW,
how come you're not on v11.4 for Big Sur?

Ah OK. I was surprised to see Apple added support for *.7z file format
since it never had a third party archive program in this clean Big Sur
installation from the end of 2020. Also, it was a first time I had to
open one in this Mac.

https://anderegg.ca/2020/08/14/what-file-types-does-apples-archive-utility-open
was an interesting read.
https://fileinfo.com/software/apple/archive_utility doesn't even mention
..7z.

It fails to do it often enough that it's not worth it.

And when it fails, it doesn’t even tell you it failed, so you have
useless files that were expanded. And if you don't check them right
away, assuming that no error means everything is good, then you can
easily end up with useless files and not archive.

And support for 8z at all is pretty recent, right? I know the Archive
Utility didn't use to support 7z files at all. But then again, it also
had issues with some zip files many years ago.

Probably, but I think there is an issue with 7z and Archive Utility too.

Inertia, mostly. : ) I have several Macs of various models here at home,
and while some run Big Sir, others run Catalina, mostly because I
haven't yet taken the time to verify that all of the stuff I have
installed is fully compatible with Big Sur. As an example, one of the
headless Mac minis in my server closet is still running Catalina because
it runs several critical Docker containers that must continue running
24/7 without issue, and I haven't had time to test them in Big Sur. I'll
get around to it eventually - no rush.

You're welcome. Just for kicks, I made 7zip compress the same WAV file
into a zip file to retest. No problems even though bigger size.
