There is a mail notification
item & another for instant
mail message.

Don't know how it works as I
have my "sounds" silent.

I don't have what you have.
All I have in System>Sounds and Vibration is
Ringtone
Notification sound
System sound
Volume

Nothing allows me to have a different sound on a per app basis.

On Android 10 anyhow, long-press the notification to customize
sound and vibration for that notification.

There's an option for Alert and Silent only in Android 12.
The only other choice is "Settings" which takes you to Notifications.

I wonder if there is a sound app that can set sounds by notification?

My Android 12 is able to do that. Each app can be configured to have a
specific sound. Settings - App

Unnecessary. Does already exist in Android.

Are you sure of that?
My Android 12 Settings Apps doesn't do it.

I selected Google Play Store for example.
The first selection is "Notifications" but nothing for the specific sound.

Same with GMail and all the apps that I selected in Settings App.
Are you running a custom ROM for Android since you have what I don't have?

Can you show me a picture of your settings.
Nobody else has the settings that you have.
Yours seem to be customized for you alone.

Just yesterday I changed the sound for K-9. There I can even choose a
different sound for each mail-account.

You're looking for *app-specific* settings. These are normally
available from *within the app*, *not* - at least not easily - from the
system-wide 'Settings' page.

As you didn't mention which phone you have, I don't use Gmail, you
probably don't use WhatsApp and my Messages app is Samsung-specific, I
can not be specific, but will give an example for my Samsung 'Messages'
app, i.e. the 'texting'/SMS app:

Open 'Messages' app -> 'menu' (in my case three vertical dots) ->
Settings -> Notifications -> New messages <your provider> (this is an
on/off switch *and* an item which you can open by tapping on it) ->
Sound -> (here you can pick the sound for incoming messages).

It should be similar (not the same) for the Gmail app.

If you happen to have/use WhatsApp, I can give specific instructions
for that, so that you can adapt those for the Gmail app.

Thank you for explaining *where* app-specific settings are stored as it
wasn't at first clear about the switch being found *inside* the app setup.
