Any recommendations for an app tthat will turn the phone off after a
certain amount of time.

I am living in my rental car, and it's working pretty well, but at home,
I have a sleep switch on the radio. I thought one would be included in
Android but I can't find it.

At night, when using the laptop, I fear that I will run down the
battery, so I keep starting the car after about 15 minutes. But I've
found if I just have the car on the equiv. of Accessory and I fall
asleep, it turns off completely after a while. That's good except it
seems to mean it's no longer powering the phone so I'd like that to turn
off too. I know some people leave the phone on all the time, but I
don't want an early caller waking me up.

enable do not disturb mode, which can be automated based on time of
day, or silence the ringer.

If I understand the OP correctly, he wants a setting to turn the phone off
completely under one of two conditions (possibly even three, in a pinch):
a. The charger goes off (e.g., the laptop powers down), or,
b. A set amount of inactivity (e.g., an hour of inactivity), or,
c. A set amount of time (e.g., an hour after hitting a button).

Running the obligatory Google search finds these low quality questions:
<https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/214055/how-to-power-off-when-charger-is-removed>
<https://www.reddit.com/r/ZFold3/comments/t4ef3x/how_to_have_phone_turn_off_completely_after/>
<https://www.quora.com/Is-there-an-app-that-can-automatically-turn-off-your-phone>

<https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/lg-d3-d850-autoboot.3714070/> <== boot
etc

A quick skim shows most are on a timer, and require root, for example:
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.jonathansautter.autooff>

But some of the apps that are mentioned don't seem to mention needing root:
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate>
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arlosoft.macrodroid>

I can't search with Aurora so I can't use my normal engine so I'm stuck with
what everyone else uses, which is Google, which sucks for this search type.

I've been working on other things, but when I fixed Aurora Store anonymous
login into the Google Play Store client repository, I could only find root
apps that will shut down the phone when the power is disconnected.

I suspect the OP needs something like IFFT or Automate to automate the task.
*Automate* by LlamaLab, 1M+, 4.4, free, ad-free
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate>

*IFTTT - automation & workflow* by IFTTT, 5M+, 3.6, free, ad-free
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ifttt.ifttt>

For example, the "Automate" tool above has these decision blocks:
<https://llamalab.com/automate/>
Note that one of those "decision blocks" is called "power source".

I've never written a tutorial on how to automate anything on Android using
these two tools so I can't tell the OP _how_ to do it, but a search found
that the Automate tool has a "decision block" for the "power source":
<https://llamalab.com/automate/doc/block/power_source_plugged.html>
"Power source plugged
A decision block that checks if the device is plugged
to an external power source.
If the proceed option is set to Immediately, then check if the device
is currently plugged in without pausing the fiber. If set to When changed,
then the fiber will pause until a power source has been plugged in,
or got unplugged."

Here is a "hello world" tutorial for using Automate on Android:
<https://trevorfox.com/2016/04/automate-android-tasks/>

It won't be soon, but someday I'll run that tutorial and then write one for
others, perhaps to shut down the phone when the power source is disconnected
for a set period of time.

If you _already_ have that automation written, please do let us know so that
we all benefit from everyone pitching in as members of a well honed team.

Thanks for looking and looking some more. I've pretty much decided not
to root my phone, and certainly not to do it while traveling, where I
don't have the time or resources to undo whatever damage I cause myself.

I looked at the two in your previous post and they say they do a host of
things.

After 11 days with a room and 16 days in the car, I apparently have TWO
rooms lined up, where I'll have a desk and can do bigger things. The
car works well -- I'm in it right now -- but something about it keeps me
from, say, deleting many browser tabs I'm almost sure i'm done with, and
from writing long complicated things. Longer than this post.

Unfortunately neither room is available until abotu 5 weeks from now.

I should get an airbnb for tonight or tomorrow, but looking through all
those choices is another one of those big tasks i don't like doing in
the best of times, and more so in the car
