I saw the message "IMPORTANT: Open VMS Next Generation Conference is cancelled due to lack of interest. The organizers apologize for any inconvenience.."

Who would organize an alternative with that lack of interest?

I agree. They must have done a survey of potential attendees before
going to the effort and cost of organising this and hence considered
it to be viable at that point. I wonder what changed ?

BTW, you don't see the cancelled message unless Javascript is turned on. :-)

Simon.

Put it into Copenhagen or such with a more central location to possible
OpenVMS users. Croatia is nice from a vacation point of view, but maybe not
the actual area there this event was planned.

It might not be lack of interest for an OpenVMS event in general, just that
this one was a bit "off" for many OpenVMS users.

I agree with Jan-Erik. The location was difficult for me and way to expensive. I don't have the time to make such a trip as much as I would enjoy both the location and conference. I wonder if multiple smaller localized conferences would be better received and attended?...

Copenhagen would not be a bad place for such an event.

VSI European office is in Copenhagen.

Based on a very small sample then it looks to me like
the biggest VMS countries in Europe today are UK, France and
Sweden. Copenhagen is sort of in the middle between those
and the flights would be short.

There are direct flights between Boston and Copenhagen
so it is also relative easy to get people from Massachusetts
in.

This is precisely why I didn't go in the end, even though I would be
keen to meet up at an OpenVMS event again. The location was an isolated
tourist location (great for a holiday), but cheap flights to nearby
airports didn't operate every day of the week, which would mean staying
three or more extra days. Also, getting from Venice to there would be a
costly car rental or ridiculously pricey coach or limo service (location
was not on any rail service).

If the event was in Paris, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan or
even a city in the US East coast, I'd have happily travelled from
Ireland, and I would expect many other people would too.

It would be a pity if it were concluded the lack of interest applied to
OpenVMS in general.

Well, even Split or Dubrovnik would probably have better communication if
you just had to be in Croatia...

Does VSI have employees in Croatia ? I wonder if that is why it was chosen ?

I always guessed that the location was chosen because the
organizers were from there.

But I don't know.

I guess that it was located to Croatia because that is a very popular
vacation area with a big tourist sectior. But that particular place might
not be in the most common area, it is more to the south with Dubrovnik and
Split...

And of course, the organizers doesn't have to be employed by VSI. :-)
