The one with a dot is an absolute path, the one
without the dot is a relative path.

Tools that insist on an absolute path, they do that because
they want to be absolutely sure you're not "picking up a fake"
that was plopped into the $CWD surreptitiously. After all,
the command you're using is elevated, and this gives opportunities
to breach the defenses of the system.

Actually, that very thing, PulseAudio, is what I had installed with
18.04 and had the defaulting to headphones issue. I never did solve it.
Other than that, it worked fine. I didn't install it this time. If I
need it, I'll consider it.
