Is there a preferred way to copy a bootable flash drive to another flash
drive?

The FD I have was made using Ventoy and is bootable and has 9 iso's on it.

mkusb uses dd.

One of its early options is 'c':

'cloning iso file, image file, or device'

I've never done your cloning of a Ventoy stick, but I like mkusb very
much for making persistent live linux, as I haven't yet mastered the
Ventoy method for persistence; so I only use Ventoy for 'plain'
multibooting linux lives not persistent.

I also recently used Ventoy to put the Hiren's BootCD of the PE variety
alongside a bunch of linuxes. That is a 'slicker' looking Hiren's than
the old msdos/ linux/ XP package which actually has more tools on it.

That sounds like a killer rescue disk.

Is mkusb in the synaptic package manager?

The route that seems the most available to me is Gnome Disks which has a
copy partition, I am hoping that it will copy everything including the
booting material. There is Clonezilla but I am a little gun shy because
of previous failures.

I didn't think dd was that complicate. dd if=/dev/sdc of=/dev/sdd
Most people use a bs argument for block size. you'd have to read up to understand what it does.

Rather; that is, 'Yes', if you put the .ppa into your sources for
synaptic in the 'conventional' way.

I have a hard time identifying the drives. dd is looking for /device/sdx
but the tools that I have to identify my drives has a different syntax.
My point is that it is easy to majorly screw up using dd.

The only reason dd would use '/dev/sdX' is because you're reading from
(or writing to) a SATA (or SCSI, or USB) block device. There is no
REQUIREMENT that you use that nomenclature -- for example a DVD is
probably /dev/sr0, or a NVMe drive is probably /dev/nvme0n1

Likewise, you can simply read from / write to a regular file. For
example, 'dd if=/dev/sr0 of=$HOME/Video/DVD.iso' to rip a dvd to an
image file (specifically in $HOME/Video).

On a related note: be careful with Mint's option "make bootable USB
stick", it doesn't always work. I recently tried to make a bootable USB
stick from a Windows 10 iso using this option, but the stick ended up
having one single udf file system instead of the expected two partitions
FAT16 + NTFS. Needless to say it didn't boot at all.

mkusb has a section about Win10s (et al)

The advantage of the newer PE Hirens is that it is prettier (a Win10 PE)
and the tools are newer and all are 'legal' freeware.

The advantage of the older 'conventional' Hirens is that it has a lot
more tools of a wide variety msdos, linux, XP; the disadvantage is that
the tools are much older and they aren't quite as legal because some of
them started out as freeware or shareware and then later became payware
or 'obligation-ware'.

https://www.hirensbootcd.org/ Hiren’s BootCD PE (Preinstallation
Environment) is a restored edition of Hiren’s BootCD based on Windows 10
PE x64.

https://www.hirensbootcd.org/old-versions/ (2012)

(the word linux appears 32x on that lineup list) I didn't even think
about counting how many old tools are in there.

Thanks, I will include on my Ventoy Multi-Boot Flash Drive.

A question, I quickly looked through the many many utilities and noticed
that some seem to be intended for a windows environment, I am going to
assume that Hirens is designed to work in a windows environment and not
Linux. So when the Hirens Boots it is a windows environment.

Some people like to use lsblk to see what's what.

Many dd instructions recommend using lsblk first to id their drives.

I do recommend using some instruction pages for dd to prevent errors.

Thanks for that. While it is an interesting read, I'm afraid I'm too
spoiled by GUIs to delve into all of that. All I want is a bootable usb
stick for work.

However I did manage to create it using Rufus on an old Win7 partition.

Linux definitely needs something like Rufus. The available alternatives
(balenaEtcher, Unetbootin) don't seem to be able to do what Rufus does.

The new PE is a W10 64 environment.

The old 'CD' (or USB) has options that allow 32bit XP, msdos, or linux.

Some of the functions of Hirens are not really for 'Windows problems'
but for 'general' problems; to boot into another environment to solve
some kind of problem which might be caused by a variety of different
things that are not necessarily related to the OS.

You seem to be 'graphically oriented' so that is why I mentioned it.
I'm including text-based graphicals as graphical which is how many of
the conventional Hirens work that are not in the graphical XP.

Thanks, and I agree with your observations, a Windows environment can be
helpful in some circumstances. I don't understand your statement 'You
seem to be 'graphically oriented' so that is why I mentioned it. I'm
including text-based graphicals as graphical which is how many of the
conventional Hirens work that are not in the graphical XP. '    As an
update to my effort to use Gnome Disk Utility, I observed that the FD
(aka) Multi-Boot, when viewed in G Disk Utility shows 2 partitions and
will not allow me to copy both partitions, where I suspect that the
booting of the Ventoy FD operates.

Will look at mkusb in the morrow.

I'm very fond of Rufus; but it is just limited to one linux per usb and
no persistence. Generally I want 'one or the other' -- multibooting or
persistence, so I don't use Rufus any more. That is a far cry from the
days when it was my favorite for writing linux .iso/s to USB in Win.

For multibooting live linux off USB, I once used Win's Yumi. But I
don't do that anymore either now that I've found Ventoy, which is MUCH
more reliable about removing and replacing .iso/s on a multiboot. Yumi
can add persistence, but I do better w/ the persistence of one linux
that I make w/ mkusb.

I like balenaetcher OK. There is something superior about Rufus'
ability to format a disk.

But I've kinda grown out of when I used to do all my dl/ing, hash
checking, authenticating and writing to USB in Win. Now I do it in
linux, typically from a live w/ persistence KDE Neon plus Kleopatra key
manager and a Ventoy USB stick. Previously it was w/ a W7 w/ hashcalc,
kleopatra, & rufus or yumi.

Sofar I have not had any problems with making a bootable flashdisk on
Linux Mint . A right hand click on a downloaded .iso file starts the
process ......but it does NOT result in a persistant flashdisk.Recently
I did it following downloading Zorin OS 16 now installed on a miniPC

I clone my working drives from time to to time.
To make sure I don'toverwrite the wrong one I create a text file under/home/<user-name>
called "Source_2022-02-18" for example.
With the power down I insert a live DVD/CD. I use knoppix.
Turn both drives on (I use caddies) and power up.
Once up I use the file manager to open the "home" partition to see if I can identify the text file.
Next unmount the "home" partion.
From knoppix bring up the terminal. Enter su and press <ENTER>
Then enter:
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=16384 status=progress. (assuming the source is on sda)

I found that 16384 was optimal for cloning a 2TB drive
status=progress displays statistics every 30 seconds (I think).

Hirens isn't command line based. The PE is purely W10 graphical
desktop. The 'conventional' 2012 15.2 first screen grub4dos is text
options to boot from the computer's hdd, a mini graphical WinXP or dos
programs or linux based rescue environment off an old 2012 Parted Magic)
or a 'string' of such tools as discwizard or too many others to list
here. I recommend that if you want to know more about it to boot it up;
it is too many parts and options to describe here.

I don't understand your statement above about what you don't understand.

Is it the 'varieties' of non-command line options besides a conventional
windows, mac or linux graphical such as ncurses that I'm calling
'graphical' text-based? Maybe look up 'text user interface' TUI.
