When you ask questions about it,
don't forget to include the model number.

The model number is not the serial number.

The model number, when you enter it in Google,
it should show up. It should be searchable.

Knowing the era of the machine, will allow
setting your expectations to the right level.

*******

"With no working browser, what good is it ? " :-)

That'll be your first challenge.

With no working https: , it's going to be a "small world".

Perhaps even when the machine was new,
it didn't have a working browser (50% compatibility index).

I found two,one of which starts to boot but does not get there, they must
be earlier because they both have 1/2"mag charger points not 5/8",I have
ordered a charger which I think will work possibly for both (ONE 15" AND
ONE 13")Probably about 2012 or so)

They are probably not intel chips if they are that old, and since you're on a Linux group and hinted Linux in your subject, I'm going to say
you'll have a horrible time getting Linux. But I know nothing about Apple anything.

==========================
I understand that as from say 2010 Apple went to Intel CPUs , hence
installing a common Linux distro should be possible . Find out the boot
options on the Apple machine , USB stick or CD/DVD and get a bootable
CD/DVD or memory stick version of a recent Linux distro . When the Apple
device has an old style 32bit CPU , there are still some 32bit Linux
distros available ,like MX linux . Even if the Apple device has a 64 bit
CPU ,a 32bit Linux distro would work .
As already advised by others ,find out the Apple device model and take
it from there .

Frank in County Wicklow -Ireland happily still using a AD2010 desktop
and a AD2013 laptop both with an Intel CPU with Linux Mint and Zorin OS
installed.

Later MagSafes were 2 & 3.

The wp has a table of what it calls MacBook A1181 family, divided into 8
models from 2006 to 2009. A1181 is printed on the case, the modelno
starts w/ MA, MB, & MC.

I do not mean to install linux on the powerbooks just try their os .

The various A1181 series came w/ Mac OS X 10.4 & 10.5. The different
models were upgradable to a range from 10.6.8 to 10.11 depending on the
model.

One of the reasons that some holders of old Macs like to see what linux
they can get running is the same reason that holders of such as old XP
hardware do, to get a modern browser.

But, just to experience that Mac OS X version desktop doesn't require
any browsing.

But it does require booting :-)

I've played with Apple once and it just slowed me down a bit getting around, but so did Linux on day one. After day 3650 Linux is easy.

Depending on the era of machine, the Finder menu and figuring
out how to select a running application can be a challenge.

The MacOS was a cooperative multitasking OS, and the running
task selection process is an indication of what is running
underneath.

The MacOSX, having regular preemptive multitasking, at
least it does not labor under the limitations of its
predecessor. The autoparking task bar, makes operation
a lot easier to understand. Up to a point.

Things like Firefox, would show up as a "Disk Image".
Double clicking the disk image, would start Firefox running.
The executable would run from the unpacked image, while the
"profile" was likely stored on the hard drive.

Example of a browser, maybe an Intel one. It doesn't have to
"install" to run. The .dmg is like a .cab or .zip, and is
a container of sorts.

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/3.5.10/mac/en-US/

Firefox 3.5.10.dmg 17M 13-Oct-2015 12:28

The OS installers for Macintosh, assume as a first step,
that the user has used Disk First Aid and set up whatever
partition(s) are needed. Then the installer has a place to
install. Having the DVD for that is handy, but only if the
OS is trashed. Don't reinstall on a whim. Because from
an era perspective, you never know what's going to break it.

Apple shed ecosystem, by changing processors.
68K, PPC, Intel, ARM. In the 68K, PPC eras, each
OS released cost $150.00. Around the end of that
era, when the OS redo showed up, the pricing policy
changed. With the ability to change processors on a
whim, you could charge people $3500.00 to use
the OS, just by means of processor abuse. That's when
I quit the ecosystem. It's not what they were doing
was a mystery -- it just got tiring of it after a while.

It's the same thing with Windows. Windows 11 wasn't created
for any technical reason. The calendar just said "it's time
to release an OS, what rubbish have we got?". And they
copied Apple, by using a hardware gate to "invigorate"
the manufacturing ecosystem. Turning desktops into smartphones
remains the objective (curated ecosystems ala Apple = $$$).

Linux does this via DKMS. And repository expiry.

And I repeat my assertion, that without a browser, even if it
had compelling applications (early days Final Cut Pro), without
a comms channel to guide your usage, you'll be mostly in
the dark. In video editing, sometimes missing formats make
entry into and out of an editor, unnecessarily painful.

One thing that Apple had at one time, was Technical Notes
or "TN". As an example, I found one TN that explained partition
tables on one of the flavors of Mac file systems and disk
partitions. The Technical Note was so thorough, I was able
to successfully write my own partition editor (when it
turned out GParted could not do it). Previous to that,
"Inside Macintosh" print volumes, provided the necessary
subsystem documentation, and I bought a couple of those.
I was selective, not wishing to buy too many of them
which would rapidly age out.

But as time passes, there is less and less of that
kind of "gold" to be had.

And the Apple fanboys are just awful. They weren't always
that bad, but years of abuse took their toll.

Paul
