I'm about to swap my elderly Win 8.1 computer for an all-singing
all-dancing Win 10 machine.

Reading posts here from last October has shown me how to move Agent
from one computer to another.

What I want to do is to move the location of the content of my
C:\Users\computer\AppData\Roaming\Forte\Agent directory from the C:
drive to another drive, so that when Agent is doing something
intensive like updating a newsgroup with hundreds of thousands of
headers I don't find the whole computer slowing down because the
update is hogging the hard drive.

Guidance please.

kind regards, BJ

In addition to Shinji Ikari's good reply,

2. This page in the Agent 8 help file:
"How to Move the Data Folder"
Help >> Index >> Data Folder (or Data Directory) >> How to Move the Data Folder

3. The next Agent FAQ article after the one Shinji Ikari pointed you to.
"I already have Agent installed. How do I move just my Agent data directory to a larger hard drive?."

Well, that was so helpful Mr Bieber.

I hadn't intended to go into further details, but just to keep you
satisfied - a few months back I purchased a (very) slightly used
office machine which they found to be completely unsuitable for
it's intended job, and the seller bought separate computers instead.

It was a Chillblast custom PC on eBay and comprised:

Phanteks Enthoo Pro case

Asus TUF X570-Plus motherboard with 32GB memory
Ryzen 5900X processor and Noctua NH-U12S Black Chromax fan

NVidia GeForce GTX1669 Super display adapter
Benq GW480 monitor

512Gb M2 drive and 4TB hard drive

Akasa AK-1CR-14 card reader
GigaByte GC-WBAX200 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card with aerial
Inatek KT4006 USB card
Pioneer BDR-212DBK Bluray recorder

Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse and K800 keyboard

Inspire T10 Speakers

I paid a shade over £1100, which (adding all of the component parts up
some months later) is just over half the new price of the components
and well under what they would have paid - IMO.

Since then, on my limited budget as a senior citizen pensioner, I've
taken the memory up to 64GB, added a 2GB M2 drive and some pre-loved
hard drives: 2 x 16GB, 1 x 14GB, 2 x 12GB and also put a 2.5" 4TB
drive in a spare slot.

It's taken me a while to find what I wanted at the right prices, but I
was just fed up with having hard drives having off the back of my
current elderly i7 laptop.

The machine has been set up for a while as I add things to it and is
usable but not as my main machine; I'm hunting down the install files
for the programs that make life easier for me :)

I collect films, music, TV programs and documentaries and I can now
bring all of the DVD-bound stuff that isn't easily accessed onto this
new computer, and my wife and I can watch whatever we want to
whenever we want to over the network.

As for Windows 11; the machine came with Win10 home pre-installed, I
checked the MS website and my machine will not currently accept a
Win11 install - something about TPM. I'm sure that when I find a
compelling reason to install 11 that there will be a way of doing so.

Once again, thank you for your help.

cordially, BJ

The TPM is a security chip. It was quite common for vendors to ship machines
with a TPM chip, but have it disabled in the BIOS. If so, it's easilly enabled.

The other major impediment to Win 11 will be the CPU, but the 5900X is
supported.

Which may require a reinstall of the OS afterwards. It requires the
BIOS to be running UEFA (?) boot mode, rather than (as my ancient Dell)
so-called Legacy boot. Dell's instructions advise that switching boot mode
will invalidate the OS install, and I have way too much stuff installed on
this machine to start fresh (especially the hassle to get Photoshop CS 6
installed -- as an upgrade install, I have to keep digging back into older
PhotoShop versions for it to validate/register).

Even with that, Dell's site does not list my box as compatible with
Win11. It may have a TPM chip, but I believe Win11 requires a /newer/ TPM
protocol/chip.

{for background: my system shipped with Win7Pro, but when the hard
drive failed I had to purchase Win10Pro; Dell did not ship separate install
media for the OS -- it was on a hidden partition /tied/ to the OEM disk
drive; cloning the drive (including hidden partitions) to a new drive
resulted in complaints that the recovery media was not valid)}

Thank you kind Sir (yep really, why don't you use your full title
<BG>)

From what I read in the computer magazines it'll be worth waiting a
while before moving to win11

True. I forgot I had to go through that hassle. Theoretically it makes it harder
for the bad guys to compromise your machine by infecting the BIOS, but there's a
cost benefit consideration.

Yep. Win 11 wants TPM 2.0. Older machines may have TPM 1.1.

Just a step further please bear with me.

My data files for Agent are located in
C:\Users\computer\AppData\Roaming\Forte\Agent

Just to make sure that this is the folder content that I need to move
to an Agent\Data directory.

kind regards, BJ

In a new install of Agent 4.2 or later, the *default* location for
Agent’s data files is in
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Forte\Agent
where %USERNAME% stands for your Windows login user name.

So if your Windows login user name is “computer” then that could be
the correct folder. But let’s make an additional check to be sure.

* Open Agent, select a newsgroup in Agent’s folders pane (any newsgroup
will do), and go to “Folder >> Properties >> Name and Scheme”.
At the bottom of the “Name and Scheme” panel are the full paths
to the newsgroup’s .IDX and .DAT files. Check if the full path
is to the same folder as above.

There is also this in the help file:
Help >> Index >> Data Folder (or Data Directory) >> How Agent Determines the Data Folder
