In all the years I have been using RISC OS, using Alt-Break has
usually worked (normally on real hardware, not an emulator), rarely
needing Ctrl-Break.

When I was running on a Real hardware SARPC, Alt-Break did often do the
business when required.

But not on Virtuals...

So much so on an Iyonix that I disabled Ctrl-Break (*fx 247 169 0) so I
didn't do it without thinking (again!).

Someone who probably knows better than either of us had Alt-Break second on
their list of "things not to do" with RISC OS:

http://gerph.org/riscos/ramble/desktop-bugs.html#WindowManager_UnreliableAltbreakhandling

Whether these issues have ever been fixed on the 5.xx branch I know not, but
I've always tended to view Alt-Break as "last resort, reboot afterwards"
anyway, whatever system I'm using.

This is another one of those things that comes from not having a proper
process model. You don't have a list of resources the task has claimed
(because the kernel doesn't really know about tasks, so when a request for a
resource is made the kernel can't chalk it up to a particular process or
task) and so you can't tidy up properly when you need to kill a task.

Of course there are hacks and workarounds that get you 95% of the way there,
but it's the remaining 5% that get you in the end.

When the ARMX6 is first booted it is not long before an error is signal
(It has just appeared as I typed this line) Cancelling it allows me to
carry on. Can anyone tell me what as caused it?
The message is:-
"Internal error; trap while in trap handler; Internal error abort on
instruction feetch at &FFFFFFFE. pc=FFFFFFFE: registers at 0015F77C "
I wonder if it is connected with the screen feezing though that seem to be
connected with trying to connect with Hermes to download mail.

This means you have something in your startup, that is causing you an
issue, and possible the root cause of your other problem you need to fix
this.

What applications do you have launched when you start your computer ? Are
they all on the latest version of the software.

You could use !Reporter to help track down the issue.

But first tell us which applications you have starting up on when you turn
your computer on?

It is a pity we have no remote control software for RISCOS to RISCOS,

Mmmnnn!
I think, back in the days, I had something from R-Comp that allowed me to
control a RISC OS computer from another computer...

I think it was called "Remote Control Software" but it was such a long
time ago 18 maybe 19 years ago, I really can't remember much about it.

Malcolm, I suggest removing SMBserver from your startup, its known to have
issues. Then reboot and see if you have any errors on startup and any
further freezes.

Securely across the internet?

I use both on my internal network most days.

Is this secure across the internet? It would also involve buying 2
licences at 60 euros each.

To be able to support say Malcolm in this case for maybe a one off
session.

Yes if over a VPN or a ssh tunnel.

No: "DeskWatcher does not encrypt any data during the transmission over the
network". It wasn't stated as a requirement in the OP...

A VPN would be possible, of course.

> It would also involve buying 2 licences at 60 euros each.

Maybe. It's 2 * 60 EUR for someone to have a licence to connect to other
machines one at a time (so it could be used to support others later on,
too). Or each person could buy a single machine licence at 2 * 36 EUR.

Again, that wasn't stated as a requirement. :-)

Unfortunately I can't imagine what the author was thinking of when
deciding on a price completely out of kilter with other RISC OS
software, especially when it's up against the free RISC OS VNC server
and clients. If it cost £10, I'm sure it would sell 6x more.

eliminated the error box I was getting shortly after switch on.
Unfortunately While reading my emails I have just had a creen freeze and
had to resort to Ctrl/Break.
