They are in the meantime almost irrelevant in the real world.

I found their irrelevance to be the most impressive part of them :-)

Windows kinda supports FLAC now. They're learning :-)

Problem is, nobody is going to pay for such a license in Linux, or any
free software variant. Not the user, nor the software distributor, nor
the developer, nor the hardware provider. They are not making money, so
they will not pay the licensing either.

Which explains why this format is not supported in Linux, except on
repositories that intentionally ignore patents, which is where I got the
gimp plugin for it.

This is the same thing that happened in the past to other formats.

Not sure where you get that idea from. It's available with ubuntu 21.04 and
22.04.

It is known that Ubuntu doesn't care about such things as software patents.

I didn't download any separate packages intentionally to
thwart anything. The GIMP I used, worked out of the box.

It's not like downloading a LAME plugin for something.
I did not encounter a step like that.

That's clearly not true.

It even asks the the user during installation whether you want to install
proprietary libraries for e.g. mp3.

Exactly, Ubuntu does that. They are not strict with licensing, as
openSUSE is.

People on openSUSE have to manually and intentionally activate external
repositories with the proprietary stuff, codecs that can not be licensed
and possibly illegal.

It is one of the most asked questions on openSUSE forums, why can't I
play this video, if on Ubuntu it worked out of the box? Answer: it is
illegal for us to do the same thing (USA legislation). You, as a private
individual, can download the packages from elsewhere, which is just a
click or two, anyway.

Bullshit and you only prove that you do not understand the licensing
system under GNU/Linux.

Yes, that was the point of my little joke.

It's simply a different stance regarding proprietary vs free/libre
software. There's also different jurisdictional issues which is much easier
to deal with issues just by not having the software available.

I don't know the context of this article, but they
seem to bake delays into stuff.

It didnt' occur to me that this was a standard wait.
"After you complete a security check, you'll have to wait 24 hours to
log into your Facebook account. During this time, your account will
still be visible to your friends on Facebook, but you won't be able to
access it. This waiting period is an extra security precaution we set up
to protect your account and the information in it. We appreciate your
patience with this security measure."

How is it extra security, they don't say. And if you're a new account,
how can you have information in it ?

After they approved me it's taken more than 2 days and counting to get
approved by one page I wanted.
