I didn't notice if these settings were in Android 11, but I've been testing
my battery by running it to zero and back to 100% when I accidentally ran
into this Android 12 setting:

Android 12:Settings > Battery and device care > More battery settings >
a. Adaptive battery
b. Show battery percentage
c. Fast charging
d. Protect battery

Do you use any of these "battery protection" options in Android 12?

Specifically with respect to battery life, do you set this option?
Protect battery = yes/no
(To extend the lifespan of your battery limit the maximum charge to 85%)

Or this?
Adaptive battery = on/off
(Extend battery life based on your phone usage)

I just turned them all on, but I'm not sure what they each do yet.

I don't get that option.

I have that, but turned off, given that I now get about 3.5 days on a full
charge, so unless I'm going anywhere I only tend to charge it every couple of
days, and don't need it "lowering" performance to extend remaining battery.

Here's what is on mine in the Android 12 "More battery settings" Activity:
<https://i.postimg.cc/PJ2G9HsG/charging16.jpg> New battery settings

Thanks for letting me know as Usenet is a team sport, and I don't have any
idea what's on any else's version of Android 12 with respect to mine.

Bear in mind it's a tiny bit tricky to get to those options because you
have to know to long press on things in order for the next level to pop up.

I think all of these are new as of Android 12, as I recall on my phone.
*Adaptive battery*
Extend battery life based on your phone usage
*Show battery percentage*
(no explanation)
*Fast charging*
(no explanation)
*Protect battery*
To extend the lifespan of your battery, limit the maximum charge to 85%

I agree with you that modern Android phone batteries last forever.
Still, it's nice to know that they consider "protecting" the battery to be
limiting the charge to 85% instead of allowing it to get to 100%.

I have no idea what exactly the others do other than the "Show battery
percentage" puts the percentage in the status bar to the left of the
battery icon.

I assume "Fast charging" simply allows fast charging or not when connected
to an appropriate charger (a fast charger came in the box with the phone).

And, I assume "Adaptive battery" maybe kills apps when the battery gets
low? (I didn't look any of these up as I was asking if people use them).

My Pixel 6 Pro offers two Adaptive options: Adaptive Battery and Adaptive
Charging. I have both of them turned on. Battery percentage is in the
parent menu of Adaptive. I have it turned off since Energy Ring Universal
Edition does what I need in a more attractive manner and takes up no space
on the bar.

I turned them all on as soon as I found out about them because though
fast-charging is useful when in a hurry and charging to 100% seems the best
thing to do, those battery-protection settings are ideal if, like me, you've
got an expensive device that is sealed with a sealed-in battery. Before
these setting became available I used to follow these principles anyway.
It's never a good idea to let a rechargeable battery go completely flat and
then be charged to 100% at a fast rate every night and kept there. It'll get
hot while charging, and the worst enemy to any battery is heat. You'll
probably have to charge your device more often, gently on a desktop qi
charger, say, but if it's charged slower and kept cool it'll last you much
longer even if it is charged more often.
