Is there a way to silence the "swooosh" of switching workspaces? I
record audio programs with Audacity and the swooosh greatly detracts
from the recording.

(Menu) Sound | Sounds | Switching workspace - move switch to off?
If that doesn't work what happens if you delete or rename switch.oga?

This has also lead me to add the text-based newsqroups I follow to
Thunderbird so I no longer need to use Forte's Agent for posting and
replies.

I have no knoledge about ForteAgent but my suggestion is to create
a signatur file and configure your Usenet client to always include
it on all your posts.

If you do so you might consider writing a script to generate the file
upon each login. That way is is current as to release and what not.
Here is one I built for Mageia users and may need to be modified for
your OS/install.
