A while back I posted about how slow my Google Nexus 7 2013 was. Since then
I have cycled the battery a few times, and used it to check on some of the
things I had stored on it. I can now say it seems reasonably responsive
when manouvering in the interface, but is still somewhat slow in retreiving
things like diplaying a folder's contents. What I am really surprised at is
the amount of data is stored in 28 of the 32 total gb of storage. I could
live with it if I had to.

I used to check how big the operating system and initial software is after
every factory reset but I haven't run a factory reset in a while so I lost
count.

I suspect at least 8GB (maybe more? maybe less?) is the Android operating
system of that 28GB, my point being it's not all data that you added.

One thing you can do, if you want, is clear your cache.
Google Play services storage (Settings > Apps > Google Play Services >
Storage > Manage Storage)

Another thing you can do, which is less risky, is load software that tells
you _more_ about what is eating up your data.

Another thing that makes a phone slow, I would think, is low RAM. You can
find out what is eating up your RAM by this Activity.
"com.android.settings/com.android.settings.Settings$AppMemoryUsageActivity"

I forget if that's hidden or not so it may not be easily available to you
without using that shortcut to an Activity like I set up for me long ago.
