I found it vey useful to set a daily data limit, since my mobile phone
contract has a rather low data volume.

This helped me to prevent "rogue" applications, which consumed most of
my monthly data volume within several hours.

However, since Android 11 (and MIUI Global 12.5.5.0) I do not find this
setup anymore.

Has this feature been deactivated?

Is that why the app Datally is no longer available?

I feel it was (or would have been) a very poor decision to remove this
very helpful feature.

But maybe I just do not know where to look for it?

All I find by now is to define a limit for data roaming.

Not an answer to your questions, but - since a long, long time - I use
this app:

'My Data Manager - Data Usage'
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm>

I think it will do everything you need - including limits for roaming
- and more.

FYI, I'm currently using this app on Android 11 (soon 12).

....bummer

The other apps I see do monitor data usage only, but do not provide an
actual limit. Some of them demand for critical network informations.

Hmmmm!? Strange! I'm in The Netherlands. I assume you're in Germany,
so both in the EU.

Anyway, you can get the app at:

<https://apkpure.com/my-data-manager-data-usage/com.mobidia.android.mdm>

I've used apkpure.com several times before and completely trust them.

Note that the app is in XAPK format (see 'How to Install .XAPK
File?'). Sofar, I've used only files in APK format. If you prefer APK
format, you can try a somewhat older version of the app, for example
9.3.2. (I'm using 9.3.0 ("Don't 'fix' what ain't broken.)).

There are many more APK-stores, but my main experience is with
apkpure.com.

I've installed the app by now.

* it feels like spyware, with a major focus on how to collect marketing
data

* it does provide alarms, but it does not provide actual limits

So, unfortunately, it's pretty useless to me. For that purpose I could
use one of many tools which are available through the play store,
including many which have the same spyware feeling.

But I look for an actual limit on mobile data, not just an alarm.

I would like to help the OP if I can but unfortunately for the OP, like
almost everyone in the USA on T-Mobile I have no data limits but I still
looked to see what was native for that topic in my Android 12 settings.
<https://i.postimg.cc/pTdjCyZT/datasav01.jpg> Android 12 data settings
<https://i.postimg.cc/MTrQFxPY/datasav02.jpg> Android 12 data settings

Searching for just "data" came up with 48 different settings, e.g.,
a. Data saver
b. Data usage
c. Mobile data
d. Mobile data usage
e. Wi-Fi data usage
f. Billing cycle and data warning
g. Cellular Data Notifier
h. Data Usage Manager
i. My Data Manager
j. Usage Data Access
k. Allowed to use data while Data saver is on
l. Deny access to usage data
m. Allow mobile data usage
n. Cellular data notifier

Maybe one of those native Android settings will work for the OP?

In addition, NetGuard can be used to block cellular data usage, can't it?

I'd like to help the OP but I personally wouldn't recommend apps outside
the standard locations that most people use unless they were exhausted.

But I don't see any evidence that the canonical locations have been deeply
searched and hence exchaused, so an outside repo is the last thing I'd
suggest for someone trying out apps to see if they fit what he needs.

First, of course, I'd look at the settings, which I did, and they "may" do
what the OP needs (but I don't have the same phone that the OP has).
<https://i.postimg.cc/pTdjCyZT/datasav01.jpg> Android 12 data settings
<https://i.postimg.cc/MTrQFxPY/datasav02.jpg> Android 12 data settings

Second, I'd look in the canonical locations for apps if they're needed.
a. Google Play Store repository (via FOSS Google Play Store clients)
b. F-droid, Github & Sourceforge FOSS repositories (e.g., App Manager)
c. Individual canonical web sites (e.g., NetGuard)

Only for the third strike would I look outside those canonical sites.

To help the OP, I ran a quick search in the FOSS Google Play Store client
on the Google Play Store repository for apps that purport to do what he
asks for, where I found plenty that "seem" to do what he wants (but maybe
not).

These are just some of many hits that "might" help the OP out (dunno yet).

If I turn on the filter to allow GSF-based apps, a flood of results
ensues, but first I'll let the OP take a look at those for size.

(Note if I don't mention otherwise, it's free, ad free, & GSF free.)
See also "NetGuard" which is what I'd suggest first to the OP.

For Android 12 (and ONE UI 4.1) it's within

* Verbindungen (Connections)
* Datennutzung (Data consumption)
* its Setup
* Datenwarnung festlegen (define data warning)
* Datenwarnung (data warning, e.g. 750 MB)
* Datenbegrenzung festlegen (define data limit)
* Datenbegrenzung (data limit, e.g. 1 GB)

and the option to define when the calculation cycle begins.
(German language setup, free translation. The actual English names may
be different)

I do not find a setup for a daily limit in Android 12.

But my Android 11 (Xiaomi Redmi 9) does not offer any of those any more.
It came with Android 10.0, which had offered the daily limit.

But it's the daily limit that will prevent rogue apps to consume your
monthly amount.

I agree with what Andy and the OP found which is there doesn't seem to be a
"daily limit" in the native Android settings anymore (as far as we know).

Given the OP's needs appear to be reasonable, I'm pretty sure there will be
plenty of third-party apps which should be able to supply what he needs.

What I suggest is the OP do the following fishing (which is what I do):
1. Install Aurora Store (which is a Google Play Store repo client).
2. Search Aurora Store for the apps he needs using strong filters.
3. If the strong filters need to be weakened, weaken them one by one.

I give the OP a 100% predicted chance of success if he follows that
process, and, to help him out, in another post in this thread, I did the
first two steps for him and reported some of my results to help him out.

The OP can get the Aurora Store from a variety of locations:
<https://auroraoss.com/>
<https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.aurora.store/>
<https://github.com/whyorean/AuroraStore>
<https://www.xda-developers.com/aurora-store-v4-update-sneak-peek-open-source-play-store-client/>
etc.

Agree for me also that it's based only on billing cycle and total limit.

Given what the OP wants would seem to be a common need.

He can certainly use NetGuard to prevent access to cellular by any given
app but he'd likely need to find an app that does exactly what he needs.

So that everyone can benefit from every thread, I took the time to make a
few screenshots showing what the English names are for what you describe:

I think we'll have to find an app on the Google Play Store repository since
what you seek appears to be a very common need that many people would have.

They do indeed collect data for market research. You can turn that
off. They say the app wouldn't exist without this. I.e. 'free' doesn't
exist and has to be paid somehow. FWIW, I've not turned it off and have
no ill effects, i.e. no 'spam' of any kind anywhere.

> * it does provide alarms, but it does not provide actual limits

The app used to be able to turn off mobile data, when near or at the
limit. However it does not (can not?) do that anymore. IIRC, that
happened when I switched from my Android 5 phone to my Android 10 phone.
Perhaps this is a limitation in some Android version? Google has the
habit of disabling/removing features in newer Android versions, so this
might well be one of them.

Anyway, that doesn't help you, unless the early warning alarms - upto
six alarms - can help you prevent to go over your budget.

FYI, I have set alarms at 30, 60 and 90% *and* two alarms for the
daily budget *and* the 'Forecast usage warning'. With all those set,
it's IMO kind of hard to get over the hard budget. But, as always,
YMMV/YMWV.

I disagree if anyone is suggesting that to get a free app we have to give
up our privacy since there are _plenty_ of privacy-aware FOSS apps out
there (e.g., NetGuard is one of my favorites and it's free).

To the point of this thread, I already provided the OP with a list of
"potential" free, ad free, and gsf free apps which would give him a daily
limit on his device but the OP hasn't reported back on them yet.

*Data Usage Monitoring: Data Counter, WiFi Usage* by Smarttechapps
Free, ad free, GSF free, unrated, 1K+ downloads
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.data.usage.manager.monitor.internet.data.daily.data.manager>

*Average data usage widget* byTrianguloY
Free, ad free, GSF free, rated 4.6, 10K+ installs
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trianguloy.continuousDataUsage>

*Usage Widget* by Basem Bitar
Free, ad free, GSF free, rated 4.0, 10K+ installs
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.usage.widget>

*App Usage Tracker* by Vaibhav Agrawal
Free, ad free, GSF free, Rated 4.0, 100K+ installs
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.agrvaibhav.AppUsageTracking>

Only after the OP looks at those apps would I bother to document the search
flipping the switch to allow GSF-based apps, where I did run the search for
him and tons of apps showed up - but there's more chance of a privacy leak
with GSF-based apps (IMHO) than with those that don't use GSF (IMHO).

Yes, this feature was removed long ago. An app I used that relied on
this feature explained this.

If that's indeed the case, then Martin can not get what he wants,
unless the Android version on his phone *itself* has this disconnect
feature.

[Repeat:]
> (my app disconnected network during my sleep, to avoid any disturbances)

Yes, now I remember that the 'Sleep as Android' app lost it's feature
to turn off all radios (Airplane mode) when starting sleep tracking.

I checked just now and the help ('?', goes to website) for the Sleep
tracking settings says:

'Sleep tracking'
<https://docs.sleep.urbandroid.org/sleep/sleep_tracking.html>

"Turn off wireless signal during sleep

This option tries to disable radios (wifi, cellular) during sleep
tracking. Due to constraints gradually introduced in Android, it
behaves differently based on the Android version you have on your
phone.
Below 4.2: turns on airplane mode
Lollipop (5): turns off wifi
Oreo (8): turns off wifi. If you have turned on airplane mode manually,
we cannot turn wifi on for features such as IFTTT or Smartlights
Q (10): does nothing - Android 10 has removed any means of controlling
wifi programmatically"

So in 10 - and presumably 11 and 12 - an app *cannot* turn off the
wifi and cellular radios.

N.B. In the 10 part, the text only mentions wifi, but at the top it
talks about wifi and cellular ("This option tries to disable radios
(wifi, cellular)". The current text in the app confirms this: "Turn off
radios during sleep".

N.B.2. Martin doesn't need *cellular* to be turned off, but *mobile
data*, so it's still somewhat unclear if an app under Android 10/11/12
can or cannot do *that* (turn off mobile data).

Frank is likely correct in that this is what one developer says about it.
<https://support.google.com/work/android/thread/120931289/how-to-turn-on-off-wifi-and-connect-to-different-wifi-networks-programatically-from-api-level-29>
"In Android Q (Android 10, API level 29) you can't enable/disable wifi
programmatically anymore."

Apparently Google blacklisted the APIs.

Ah, this app I used is, was, another one. It did things according to
location and rules. Like, enabling wifi when near home, disconnecting it
when getting away. I don't remember the name now. The phone I used it on
would be on Android 2 or 4. A Samsung Galaxy 2 mini.

In my case, cellular radio remained on, I could get calls, but internet
was off, so whatsapp was effectively disabled.

It is not monitoring, but disconnecting cellular data he wants. That is
what is not allowed.

I read the initial posts days ago so I may have some of this wrong...

I think the OP has a few (reasonable) needs as far as I skim his needs:
a. He seems to want a _daily_ limit on data usage (on a per-day basis)
b. He seems to want a daily _alarm_ after that daily limit is reached
c. He may even want a daily cellular-data _disconnect_ after that limit

Even if those are not what he wants, those needs, wants and desires seem
perfectly reasonable to me - since it's what anyone might want who has data
limitations - which is why I was initially so confident that we can find
them on the net for him (or that he could find them on the net himself).

That's why I first checked & documented my own Data Saver Android settings:
<https://i.postimg.cc/pTdjCyZT/datasav01.jpg> data settings 1of4
<https://i.postimg.cc/MTrQFxPY/datasav02.jpg> data settings 2of4
<https://i.postimg.cc/6p8dSjnL/datasav03.jpg> data settings 3of4
<https://i.postimg.cc/WbMFCBHv/datasav04.jpg> data settings 4of4

As I recall, his phone was different from mine, so that might be an issue,
but I think his objection to _those_ Android 12 settings was that they're
on a "billing cycle" limit, and not on a _daily_ limit.

Again, his needs are reasonable (IMHO), so I next sought out apps that
purported to provide daily limit alarms and analysis on a per app basis.

I haven't heard back from the OP whether or not any of those apps fit his
needs, and if they don't, why they don't fit his needs... so I can only
assume at this point (without running the tests for him) that they do.

As I said from the beginning, I am trying to help the guy even though I
have no need anymore to worry about data (but I used to have a similar
limited-data problem so I felt for the guy and just wanted to help him).

However, what I did not know at the time I think nobody knew originally but
which Frank was the first to allude to (AFAIK) is that Android 10 disabled
a lot of what we can find in terms of apps & reviews on the Internet.

At this point, we can be pretty safe in assuming he can't "disconnect" the
data automatically in any app after Android 10 (but maybe there is a
workaround?)... so if that is true... and if he still wants daily data
information, then all I ask the OP is to let us know why any of the apps
that provide an _alarm_ when the daily limit is reached can't suffice.

Posted out of the goodness of my heart to disseminate useful information,
but I admit that the OP has to let us know what his next level of needs are
given that a programatic disconnect of data may be infeasable after Android
10+.

Reasonable, yes.

Google is not reasonable, but thick headed, and says "no, you can not do
that" (disabling network programmatically). End of history.

While I do not know what Google's rationale was in Android 10 blacklisting
the API's that allow "programatic" disabling of the cellular data network,
I'm always of the opinion that 99 out of 100 problems can be solved.

Particularly problems that are issues that everyone would have if they had
a data limit. All it takes is intelligence, trial & error, & effort.

I can't remember the last time I failed at solving a computer problem, but
even I lose 1 out of 100 times when things are simply not possible to do,
but I think most people fail 99 out of 100 times when things start getting
tough simply because tons of people simply lack the intelligence and
problem solving imagination (IMHO) that it takes to solve hard problems.

Notwithstanding most people (IMHO) are incredibly helpless when it comes to
doing things they way _they_ want them done as opposed to the way Google
wants them done, I think it's good that the OP appears to _not_ be one of
those unimaginative helpless people who can only do what Google hands them.

Lord knows, I certainly try to do what I want to do and not what Google
wants me to do, so, for example, I use my phone without ever logging into
Google servers and my phone does (so far anyway) what I want it to do.

Hence, I'm pretty sure the OP will resolve this problem, but I can't spend
the energy to solve it for him as I'm currently working on eliminating
Google without rooting the phone (which is taking most of my effort today).

At the very least, the OP can get daily alarms and then he can _manually_
turn off cellular data to those apps which are using too much cellular data
(e.g., using NetGuard). <https://netguard.me/>
<https://raw.githubusercontent.com/M66B/NetGuard/master/screenshots/50-theme.png>
<https://raw.githubusercontent.com/M66B/NetGuard/master/screenshots/08-notifications.png>
<https://raw.githubusercontent.com/M66B/NetGuard/master/screenshots/03-main-access.png>
<https://raw.githubusercontent.com/M66B/NetGuard/master/screenshots/20-traffic-log.png>

That alone should do what the OP appears to need done, only it will take a
manual button press inside of NetGuard when the alarm sounds, and then
another the next day to turn the cellular data back on for that app.

The free automation apps "might" do some of that action for him, such as:
*Automate*
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate>
*IFFT*
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ifttt.ifttt>
*Automagic*

Almost never have I failed to get Android to do whatever I want it to do.

I agree. I can't be done by apps. But it was built into the system
before and it was removed from it.

Do you know where to send suggestions (or even petitions) for Google's
Android?
