Anyone know how to change the coin cell on this motherboard?

The board seems to have "TUF thermal armor", which seems to be a plastic
cover over the whole motherboard, providing ducting for cooling (???).
The motherboard manual shows where the coin cell is, but it seems to be
under this sheet; if it is, how do you get at it? How is the armor fixed
to the motherboard?

(We think the cell has run down and is causing problems, but can't get
at it to measure it - assuming we're looking in the right place that
is!)

Following videos found by searching Youtube on "ASUS Sabertooth Z77 cmos
battery". YT is handy for finding videos on stuff like this. Google
Images is also good for seeing pics of the mobo (pick large size to help
get closeups).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSTTR_WVtx0
The mutters a lot, but you can see the screws on the backside of the
mobo you have to remove which also means you have to remove the mobo
from the backplated on which it gets mounted. Notice you have to remove
a fan atop the armor plate.

When putting back together, you might consider discarding the armor
plate. This mobo isn't installed inside a case, or you leave the side
panel off? I would've tossed the armor cover when I built the computer.
Too often after initial setup, I need to get at the mobo to make
changes. No SSD NVMe slots, so that helps eliminate getting under the
armor cover sometime later.

If you're going toss the armor cover or don't much care about it, see
the following where the guy snips it off with a diagonal side wire
cutter. He just snips enough to lift up the armor cover to let him get
at the cmos battery.

Here's the first hit on Youtube of a British-sounding guy who needed to
replace the battery, which he calls a BETT-ree. In his case, the
motherboard needed to come out of the case, then the 8 screws on the
back needed to be removed plus a small fan on the front had to be
removed and Bob's your uncle.

It's a rocket surgery.

Somewhere under that plastic armor, your quarry awaits.

Damn! I didn't see any break in the video and that PC came up to the desktop almost instantly from the Mobo logo. Did I really see that
right? If so that's a good setup.

The design is intended for people who "needed a hobby" :-)

And besides, you get to clean the dust off things,
so it's all good. As long as you don't mind a little
dust on your work table. (No, don't use a "Hoover".)

I have run into 1 of those in my travels, but can't remember what brand
of M/B it was on, But sadly I didn't get to change the battery, the PC
had PSU problems.

Would that make the M/B coin cell easier accessible?

It's muttering all over. Turning on subtitling makes it a lot

This was a computer already built and given to my friend. Considering
the amount of effort we had getting all 8 SATA cables in and to stay in,
the thought of dismantling the computer (you have to unplug more or less
everything to take the mobo out) ... I've just convinced my friend to
not turn off the power supply at the back! (If left thus - i. e. in
standby - that's enough to keep the settings.) should he forget or
there's a power cut. four keys - with a pause before each - will make
the computer go: F1, enter, downarrow, enter. (This for a blind friend
who thus can't use a mounse.)

Thanks.

I suppose he does show it at the reassembly stage. but he starts from a
position of already having removed the 8 screws holding the "armor" in
place, which are on the _back_ of the mobo so you have to take it out
ofthe case (necessitating more or less dismantling the whole PC)!

If you ever bite the bullet and remove the armor, I think I would just
leave it off unless it has a function greater than how it looks.

The implication in the manual is that it helps cooling (presumably
that's what the tiny fan is for), and the "Armor" name doesn't have
anything to do with protection in the physical sense.
Certainly with it present, the board was at only around 39-41 at various
places according to a utility (coretemp?) earlier today, though I wasn't
running anything demanding at the time. If we ever do get round to
replacing the cell, I'll be inclined to put back the thing, though maybe
making a hole in it over the cell! (But it's such a pain persuading both
ends of 8 SATA cables to stay in that I doubt we ever will. Not a
satisfying design of connector - at least, the sockets on some drives
don't seem to "click", however hard I push.)

Cover is probably for temperature control so I would cut an access hole
and "outside" tape over it or single pop rivet a pivoting cover plate.
Another thought is to add cell holder to outside of armor and wire it
into socket with long enough wires to allow pivoting cover out of the
way if have to access again at another time.

Even though I know that, I always say "battery," not "cell."

Reminds me of mechanical engineering school and first design/drawing
class where many came up with terrific designs that could not be
disassembled after final assembly. Magic needed!
