Please can someone point me to an idiot's guide to creating a USB stick
that will load e.g.SystemRescue onto my new PC? I've tried Ventoy, which
created an encouraging 2 partitions on the stick. Following their
instruction, I copied the SystemRescue ISO into partition 1, but it
doesn't seem to be recognised (mind you, I'm having some trouble
understanding the BIOS boot options)
TIA

Where /sdx is the usb stick
man dd
If you want a gui solution, try multiboot.

I cannot remember if I did that with my bios.

But suspect that may have been a requirement.

What I mercifully don't remember is the horrendous time I had trying to
install /boot/efi and GPT. I couldn't find a concise howto only rambling
incoherent explanations about GPT and EFI. Maybe I could write one if I
remembered what I did.

It was a DVD install.

Do not look forward to doing it ever again - but I am also sniffing
around new motherboards. I'm clearly into self flagellation. :-(

Do you keep notes Bobbie, or be blessed with eidetic memory?

regards

Are you working from Mageia or from Windows?
In PCLinuxOS we use a script running dd called "ddcopy" and it never
fails with hybrid .iso or with .img. likely it could be moved
to the Mageia platform easily. Otherwise you could go to the System
Rescue site and follow the instructions there.

Hmm, I followed the instructions on the download screen.
https://www.system-rescue.org/Download/
found by clicking the USB sticks link under the
Installation on a USB stick or internal disk paragraph.

I also fixed grug2 to boot the iso so I did not have to hunt for the
thumb drive or the cd. :)

Partition 1, as in 0, 1 or 1, 2 ????? Anyway, you have to copy into the
second partition.

Bobbie has said what I would have said. Secure Boot is Windows' way of
making sure that you have Windows on your system somewhere. You can
turn it off in the BIOS.Then, so far as Linux is concerned, it doesn't
exist. You still have UEFI, but any protection you have against
rootkits, etc, is lost. In other words, you are back exactly where you
were before. One of the distros supplies its own "signature" so that it
can run under Secure Boot, but AFAIK, it is the only one.

HTH,

Doug.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I have found the way to
disable secure boot, after which I found I did indeed have a bootable
stick, provided I choose the correct partition to boot!.
Thanks again,
