Jusy over a week ago my Xiaomi Mi9 cellphone system became corrupted.
I believe it was caused by a sync program downloaded from the play store.

The result was that I could not get into phone because it no longer recognised my password.
Nothiong would get past this.
Eventually my son-in-law reset it to factory defaults
Then all hell broke loose.
Xiaomi would not send me a password unless I answered a list of questions many of which I did not have the answers to.
There have emails twoing and froing with UK support but they are trotting out what's on their website, so no real help.

While the hardware is excellent, the implimentation of Androd and their own MUI overlay makes the whole thing tedious.

So, can someone recommend a replacement with something with a similar hardware spec:

Size 6.39 inches, 100.2 cm2 (~85.2% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~403 ppi density)
Protection Corning Gorilla Glass 6
Memory 8Gb od RAM and 128GB of storage
Platform Android 9.0 (although it would be about 12 now)

Thanks in advance,

Alan (I'm so depressed. Shall I press this button) :(

Alan, you don't mention price, but I would suggest the Google Pixel 6 Pro. One
generation behind, so good value for money. Super camera.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=pixel+6+pro&crid=3TP04KBJ34TVZ&sprefix=Pixel+6+pro%2Caps%2C78&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_2_11

£458 (refurbished)
£538 (new)

I've had one of these and, for me, it beats the recent 7 Pro which I bought and
sent back.

I was just about to suggest that very thing. Assuming, of course, that
money is important. Otherwise I'd say go for the Pixel 7 Pro. There are
some pretty good prices being offered this season. With luck OP might get
the one that I traded in on my 7 Pro -- the old phone was absolutely
pristine and couldn't be told from new.

Use GSM Arena to do a search. Here's one search with those parameters
plus a few others
<https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2021&nPriceMin=350&nPriceMax=700&nRamMin=8000&nIntMemMin=128000&nDisplayResMin=2073600&fDisplayInchesMin=6.3&fDisplayInchesMax=6.6&chkNFC=selected&chkUSBC=selected&nChargingMin=15&nChargingWMin=10&sMakers=48,46,107,45,4,1,128,95,82,9,7,80>

Probably the Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 are your best bet.

Better to buy it directly from Google for the same price
<https://store.google.com/config/pixel_6a>.

But wait!

Buy a reconditioned Apple iPhone Xr from Tracfone
<https://www.tracfone.com/phone/apple-iphone-xr-64gb-reconditioned> for
$99.99 and use it as a $279 trade-in on the 6a.

$299-279+99.99=$119.99.

$119.99 is a heck of a deal for Pixel 6a.

I've always suspected that Best Buy's 'special' prices aren't
necessarily all that good. They used to sell big USB HDs cheap, and you
could take the drive out of the container and use it as an internal
drive. I could never figure out why the drives were cheaper with the
housing than without.

That's about what I paid for my Pixel 2 2.5 years ago. -

some external drives have an embedded usb bridge instead of a sata
connector, so while you can remove the drive, you can't put it in a
sata bay.

Before Covid I needed a few laptops for college kids' gifts and the HP
Windows 10 S models of the day were around $250 at both Best Buy and at
Costco on sale but Costco always wins out on their return policies (even
for electronics).

I just picked up a half dozen of the 5TB seagate USB hard drives on sale
for $90 plus tax (about $100) at Costco this week. They're still on sale.

While nospam is usually full of shit (which amazes me his need for
pathological lying for no good benefit), in this case he's correct.

If that's true, and I have no reason to doubt it, it's one of the cases
where nospam isn't being a pathological liar.

When nospam isn't being a pathological liar, he can be informative.

Note that I study these strange uneducated ignorant iKooks, where it's
pretty easy to figure out people like Jolly Roger, Your Name, Alan Baker,
Lewis, et al, but nospam is different since he actually sometimes knows
something.

Yet nospam feels desperate to lie most of the time.
It's like he can't help himself.
He has to lie.

I don't know _why_ nospam does that.
I just know that it's what he does.

Before we get into a childish pissing contest with nospam, I'm sure Costo
doesn't _always_ win out over Best Buy - so change that to "almost" always.

As for Windows S, I converted every one of them to Windows 10 Home, which
was simple (after the first one) and then I gave them as stocking stuffers.

Sounds like it's too late now, but due to android's sandboxing one app shouldn't
even be able to break another app, let alone break the whole phone!

Your helpful son-in-law hadn't previously "rooted" your phone for you?

Xiaomi Mi9

As a final shot i contacted Xiaomi Global Tech support.

They were brilliant and eventually I recovered my phone which is more
responsive than before.

If I had not moved home this would never have happened.
The packers stuck the box with all is codes and data into a crate,
still in storage.

Lesson?

Make sure you record every detail from the box your phone came in and
store it on your computer or other place.

Thanks for all the advice.

Alan
