Is your phone rootable?

Go to OneClickRoot on any web browser
<https://oneclickroot.com/select-device/>
a. I clicked on "Samsung",
b. and typed the model "SM-A326U",
c. and selected "Galaxy A32 5G (SM-A326U)"
d. Then I selected "Android 12" as the Android version
e. And then pressed on "Verify Device Rootable"
f. It reported "We're Sorry"
"Your Samsung Galaxy A32 5G (SM-A326U) is not rootable."

Apparently, based on my research anyway on the XDA Developers' site,
any USA Galaxy A32-5G (SM-A326U) with a "Build number 5th-digit-from-right"
greater than 5 (mine is 8) can't unlock the bootloader, which means it
can't be rooted, apparently, by anyone. Sigh.

What about your phone?

My Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G is rootable according to the website.

Rather long thread here about rooting the phone:
<https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/root-gained.4290689/>

Rooting isn't of interest to me, and reading threads such as the one
above and
<https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/quick-guide-how-to-unbrick-camellia-camellian-and-restore-imei.4502077/>
tells me it isn't /that/ easy.

Thanks for that information about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G being
rootable. I asked because I was curious which phones are rootable.

BTW, long ago I rooted the Samsung Galaxy S3 using one of the one-click
methods (I think it was KingoRoot because SuperSU needed the USB port and
mine was toast at the time).

An advantage of one-click rooting, as I recall, is you can always unroot.

What that means, if I remember correctly, is you can root in one click,
and then you can delete the stuff you couldn't delete before you rooted,
and then you can un-root back to where you where before - but without the
carrier bloatware.

Another advantage of rooting, of course, is you have access to more
powerful apps, many of which require a rooted phone to work (e.g., Titanium
Backup, as I recall - but there are many others for sure).

I guess we could start a thread on what apps are useful that require
rooting, which would flesh out that topic further than you or I can alone.

Posted out of the goodness of my heart to disseminate useful information
which, in this case, is to flesh out what phones can and can't be rooted.

I always assume my cellphone is hackable by everyone but
me and only use it occasionally for phone calls. The NYTimes
had an in-depth article yesterday about Israeli-made
malware used by governments to commandeer your cellphone
without needing any action on your part.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/08/us/politics/spyware-nso-pegasus-paragon.html

(If you see a paywall, disable script and reload the page.)

Of course, such things will be mainly used in a spy vs spy
context, but it shows the technology is there and the
vulnerabilities are there.

We had a similar NSO discussion on the iOS newsgroup, where, to the
knowledge of everyone on that group, the Pegasus spyware mostly infects the
iOS kernel (although it "can" infect other components of both iOS &
Android).

To date, Pegasus has _never_ infected the Android kernel.
Pegasus, to day, has only infected (multiple times!) the iOS kernel.

I don't know why this is the case though, so if someone out there knows
more about _why_ the iOS kernel is so vulnerable compared to the Android
kernel, please let the rest of us know why.
--
BTW, despite Apple's (brilliant) advertising to the contrary, this is yet
another of many situations where iOS is far more vulnerable to hacking than
Android (the other situation being iOS consistently has far more zero-day
holes than Android - none of which are ever caught by Apple engineers - so
they can't be fixed until someone is kind enough to tell Apple of their
one-a-month zero-day holes in iOS).

Look on the back of your phone (under the battery if removable) or in
'Settings, About' for your phone model number (SM-xxxx). Samsung typically
offer a lot of different variations of their phones under the same marketing
name, sometimes with completely different silicon in them, or customised for
specific countries or networks. Sometimes rooting differs between versions.

> And is this a yes or no for all root methods or just this one root method?

This appears to be a specific service: "Certified OneClickRoot Technicians
help you in 3 effortless steps". I'd guess they set up a video call to talk
you through the process. I'm not clear how it can be in 'one click'.

I'd search places like XDA Developers to see if somebody has described the
process for your specific phone, once you know the model number.
