I try to compile a TeX file and meet the following error:

<quote>
/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/tex/latex/mathtools/mathtools.sty
(/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/tex/latex/tools/calc.sty)
(/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/tex/latex/mathtools/mhsetup.sty))
(/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/tex/latex/stmaryrd/stmaryrd.sty))

! LaTeX Error: Command \C undefined.

See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation.
Type H <return> for immediate help.
...

l.716 \renewcommand{\C}
{\mathbb{C}}
?
</quote>

The TeX file tested above is located at <https://github.com/hongyi-zhao/temp/blob/master/3410-latex-print-style.tex>.

Any hints for solving this problem will be highly appreciated.

Regards,
HY

The \C command is not defined. Instead of using \renewcommand try to use
\newcommand.

Really it does the trick. To be frank, this TeX file is generated using the xsltproc tool based on the <https://github.com/sean-fitzpatrick/Math3410> project, as shown below:

$ xsltproc --stringparam publisher ../publication/publication.xml --xinclude ../../../rbeezer/mathbook.git/user/3410-latex-print-style.xsl ../ptx/3410notes.ptx -o 3410-latex-print-style.tex

See <https://github.com/sean-fitzpatrick/Math3410/issues/4> for more detailed info. But I still don't know what caused the problem reported here.

HY

Right. That would always be step #1.

using the xsltproc tool based on the
<https://github.com/sean-fitzpatrick/Math3410> project, as shown below:

Using someone else's code almost always means they have made assumptions
about the packages you are using. In this case, I'd say the author
has lots of built-in packages that he uses daily, and he cannot conceive
of anyone ever NOT having the same set of packages --- one of which will
almost certainly define \C --- so he hasn't included them explicitly.

But as he hasn't told you any of this, you get an error and have to guess.

> But I still don't know what caused the problem reported here.

You will need to check out each of the packages HE loads and find out
which one defines \C.

Perhaps the code is relying on hyperref predefining \C, which it no
longer does by default.

Yes but under different circumstances that may throw another error. In
thse cases it is safest to use both provide and renew in that order --
or only provide if you expect the other definition, if given, to be
superior.
