64GB

Phone had discharged to zero then fully charged, SD card (and apps) gone.

Put SD card into pc for CHKDSK, nothing appears

Phone offers to reformat.

Will reformat in 24hrs unless better idea

Will even reformat work?

I got like my whole life in there and can only rebuild 90% of files

a. Try another phone.
b. Try another sd card reader.
c. Try to look at the sd card in a PC.

There are _plenty_ of solutions that you should do _before_ even _thinking_
about reformatting the card just because one device can't read it.

Most of the time you remove & re-insert and it works; but you wouldn't even
think of reformatting until you've tried a set of other devices as above.

Anything else is, well, reformatting for sure, is just plain stupid.

Use a cloud. Never made a backup? You are not serious?

Google-Drive
Drop Box
(just as examples)

exist.

It is not clever to have important data stored locally on a mobile
device and no realtime backup.

BTW: This is the conceptual failure of Google to allow such stuff in a
phone. Never happens on a an iPhone.

BTW: There are specialised companies that are probably able to recover
your data from the SD-card with forensic methods. Under nor
circumstances reformat.

Does that mean your iPhone data is automatically backed up to the
"iCloud"? In other words, even if you *don't* want it backed up there it
is anyway?

I find it strange that when the OP plugged the SD card into his PC
nothing appeared. That would seem to suggest a faulty contact rather
than a memory failure of some sort. As Andy suggested, I would certainly
try other devices/adapters first. Surely the OP meant SDHC card rather
than SD card? He refers to 64GB, which would require an SDHC-SD adapter
to plug into a PC's SD card port. I know from experience that these can
fail.

It's a choice by the user. You get 5GB storage for free and can pay for
more.

First thing is to stop messing with it. Then make a low-level copy of the
file system and only use this in future attempts to recover files. Photorec
is a great tool for extracting corrupted files.

Apple designed the iPhone expressly to make profits for themselves, which
isn't unnatural, but what Apple did (brilliantly so) was NOT allow sdcards.

By doing so, Apple forced their customer to find alternatives, which, let's
be honest and intelligent about it, Apple then provides (for a fee).

As a result, iPhones are crippled, most obviously in terms of this thread,
in that iPhones completely lack inherent portable storage functionality.

This thread is a troll written by a stupid person who made revealing
statements in the op of their intent to trash sd card functionality.

I doubt the OP even has an sd card, or an Android phone.
The whole thread is a fabrication from the start.

Which is why I answered it the way I did, in the faint glimmer of a hope
that the question was real, as my answer is what normal people would do.

Hi Chris,

I realize you iKooks lack intelligence and as a result you have no formal
education, but ask yourself a simple question about NOT having choices.

How is it "better" for iPhones NOT to have the choice of portable storage?

Hi Chris,

The OP fabricated his problem but even so, you and I answered correctly
with the same sensible advice that anyone who isn't stupid would provide.

The only "value" in this thread is for the lurkers and responders, since
the OP doesn't even have the problem the OP "says" he has, which you can
tell by the way the OP is written if you look at it with any sense.

Hence, for the people who _do_ ever have this problem, my take is:
a. Chris is correct one should not write to the card
b. Most (maybe all?) have a write lock which should be enabled immediately
c. Remove & re-insert usually fixes installation problem (which are rare)
d. Cleaning contacts fixes any grit problems (which are even rarer)

If we assume the OP's problem is real, then we normally insert the card
into another device (of which there are zillions to choose from).

Almost always the card will work well before we get to the recovery stage.

In addition, to continue to ADD VALUE to this otherwise worthless thread,
one hint that I find absolutely FANTASTIC is simply to RENAME your sdcard!

Instead of some random name like 12345-ABCDE which is what it is now,
you change it to something like 00000-00001 which allows you to change
your _next_ sdcard to 00000-00002, and the next to 00000-00003, etc.

That's what I used to do, as I _saved_ all my old sdcards, but nowadays I
_reuse_ my sdcard among multiple devices (particularly since I've had my
free Samsung Galaxy A32-5G replaced twice under warranty).

What I do now is I rename _all_ my sdcards to 00000-00001 using the PC.
That way I can put it in a new phone and almost everything still works!

*+-I find it strange that when the OP plugged the SD card into his PC
*+-nothing appeared. That would seem to suggest a faulty contact rather
*+-than a memory failure of some sort. As Andy suggested, I would certainly
*+-try other devices/adapters first. Surely the OP meant SDHC card rather
*+-than SD card? He refers to 64GB, which would require an SDHC-SD adapter
*+-to plug into a PC's SD card port. I know from experience that these can
*+-fail.

Thanks.I have another speculation. When I moved this SD card from another
phone, it complained so I told it to set it up exclusively for this phone,
not to be removable. Dumb idea, in the past I moved the same SD card forever
when I changed phones. I suspect this "disk spanning" (as it i called in
Unix) prevented the SD from being read by several Windows devices. However,
other celfons say the SD is corrupt and needs reformating. So if I do
reformat, I will not use spanning.

I am now letting the phone drain to zero and will try to repeat the situation
which created the problem.

The "Kooti" brand micro SD was from Walmart.

A year ago I deleted my Gmail, Facebook, Amazon, Yahoo,
Compuserve.. accounts. I got tired of Gmail requiring Java script, of all the
censorship (I hurt my knee and only one friend was able to read my FB plea),
and I published a book on Amazon that only appeared on Google Japan. I have a
Unix shell ISP which I also use as plain text dial up as well as ConnectBot
from my phone.

Ironically I don't think I used much of the 64GB. My phone internal memory
is only 50% used. but because of spanning, it is blocked.

It's not photos, it's documents mostly.

Given this morphed to the iPhone, what's NOT OPTIONAL is that the iPhone is
crippled in that it's IMPOSSIBLE to get the functionality of sd cards.

Sure, you can hang dongles on the iPhone, but that eliminates most of
the inherent advantages of having an internal sd card in the first place.

Apple designed the iPhone to force its customers into the expensive
storage methods that, conveniently, Apple willingly supplies (for a fee).

Unfortunately, everything this OP concludes is that which is of an idiot.
a. The OP takes a single (wrong) datum
b. And then the OP makes idiotic (wrong) conclusions
c. None of which are sensible or logical

For example...

Since when does reading/writing to/from a Google email account require
javascript? Just use any of a billion mail user agents. Like everyone else.

Here are just some of the better privacy-aware MUAs on Android:

Spanning?

Contrary to what the iKooks said, most Android phones have rather reliable
internal sdcard memory options which work well for those who aren't stupid.

WTF?
You "told" the sdcard to "set it up exclusively for this phone?"

Are you talking about setting it up as "portable" versus "adoptable"?
<https://support.google.com/android/answer/12153449?hl=en>
Adoptable (internal) isn't movable while portable is.

BTW, you can format the card 50:50 adoptable & portable, which is neat.
adb shell and then sm list-disks adoptable. Then do something like
sm partition <DISK ID> mixed 25 to have 25% portable storage
and 75% private storage.

Only an idiot would even think of reformatting just because one device
had an issue reading the sd card. For all you know it's inserted wrong.

Back to portable versus adoptable, so as to provide value to lurkers:

Portable storage is when the card is simply formatted as fat32 or exfat and
can be easily read on multiple devices. This is optimal if you are just
storing media files or files created by an app (assuming the app lets you
use the SD card).

Internal storage typically refers to the phones own storage. If you meant
adoptable storage then that is when Android specially formats the SD card
so that it can be used for storing apps. Unlike portable storage the card
cannot then be easily read on other devices or even the same device if you
factory reset. The card is essentially encrypted and tied up the specific
Android instance. Google introduced this feature to help with devices with
low amounts of internal storage but IMO it is kind of hit and miss. Simply
getting a phone with sufficient internal storage is the better option.

It's a really good idea to "let the phone drain to zero" because that will
accomplish nothing but it will keep you from posting back here for a while.

This thread is authored by Alan Baker most likely, who doesn't even own an
Android device. Nor an sd card. The entire problem is fabricated by him.

Tell us, oh vaunted OP, what Android device are you using for this?

Hi nospam,
Your comment is that of an adult, but you whooshed on the concept.

First off, let's be realistic this thread is, IMHO, authored by an iKook
who was hoping to turn it into a thread where the iPhone internal storage
is more reliable than the Android external storage, which, if that's the
case, they could have just said that outright as nobody would disagree.

That iKook was, IMHO, most likely Alan Baker, but in my responses, I give
it 50:50 that it's an idiot posting this thread who is "as dumb" as he.

More to my main goal, I also added value, in terms of my explantion and
links to MUAs for reading/write to Google mail accounts, and that of
portable versus external storage, and even, if I took the OP's stated
problem seriously, even how to jiggle/wiggle the sd card if, indeed, the
OP's fabricated problem was real (all to end up adding useful value).

Now to your point...

I don't begrudge Apple a profit motive but I do deplore HOW Apple does it.

How did you miss that?

NOTE: The huge problem with you nospam, is you don't own the intelligence
or education to even comprehend what the main point is. All you can do, and
all you ever do, is defend Apple to the death - without understanding why.

The main point on the difference between iPhone and Android internal
portable storage is that Apple never gave a single customer that choice.

Android does.
And most people buy Android phones which have internal portable storage.

How did you miss that?

You should try.

But never format the card. Just remove it, buy another, and take the old
card to someone or some shop that does recovery.

Don't reformat.

The card can only be used in the phone where you did "set it up
exclusively for this phone". It is probably encrypted.

Any operation on the card can destroy further the data in it.

Many Thanks.

Removing the SD card gave me my apps, but not the data (eg, RSS news, pdfs
and so on). Half good news

How do I find someoen who can save the SD card?
