Keyboard shortcut NOT working in Mint - Mate

I like to add a keyboard shortcut with "xkill"

Following the instructions lead to nothing
After adding the "name" and "command"
there is no way to couple a key combination.

I don't know what instructions you are following.

I dl/ed LM Mate 20.3 and wrote it to a multiboot Ventoy stick and booted
it. xkill was installed by default in the x11-utils package and it is
located in /usr/bin. Its default permissions are root. For some reason
I had trouble authenticating the hash, tho' I had the key.

xkill doesn't have a default shortcut, but an existing default shortcut
is alt-F2 from which you can execute

sudo xkill

That lets you choose a window to kill by clicking on it.

So, if your problem is creating a shortcut, maybe you need to use chown
to give your user ownership of xkill if you aren't going to use the sudo
command for it.

I changed the ownership of Mate's xkill and I created a custom shortcut,
but it didn't work; giving me an error that I didn't understand:

"Error while trying to run (ctrl+alt+k) which is linked to the key (<alt>k)"

There was an earlier different error when I tried to make the shortcut
ctrl+alt+k, then I changed it to alt+k.

So, I don't yet understand how to make a working shortcut for xkill in
Mint Mate, but I can perform xkill w/ shortcuts to the command.

Well under -Control Center- Keyboard Shortcuts there is an option "Add"

I would think that add option should make it possible to add something
but I might be wrong.

Selecting "add" opens a window (1) with "custom shortcut" and a "name"
for it and a "command"

Then there is "Apply", so far so good, instructions :
"To edit a shortcut key, double-click on the corresponding row and type
a new key combination, or press backspace to clear"

Double clicking on the created xkill row just opens the window (1) again
and no way to create a shortcut key combination.

I was able to do it now.

First I used chown to change the permission for xkill.

Then I created a custom shortcut named xkill whose command was xkill.
Then I double-clicked the xkill item in the Custom shortcut section and
used my alt-k combo to populate that shortcut section.

Then I started the Image viewer and used alt-k, an x appeared in the
viewer's window and I clicked it and the viewer closed.

When I was trying to do this before, I had activated sticky keys, which
I prefer. Occsly sticky keys condition interferes w/ some modifier key
functions; usually not.

That is, a cursor w/ an X icon. If one had several windows open they
could move the X to the window/app they wanted to close.

I like to try that, how exactly did you do that step by step?

Go to /usr/bin and CHANGED ownership to what?

I don't see why that keyboard shortcut should work after you changed the
ownership, but if you tell me how you did it, I will try

In my case, I was using a live Mint Mate 20.3 whose default user was
mint. I opened a terminal in /usr/bin and used the command sudo su to
get a 'root' # prompt.

Then I used the command chown mint xkill to change the owner to mint and
exited the root term.

Then I went to the keyboard shortcuts; you can get there by navigating
graphically or you can command mate-keybinding-properties.

Then I did what I said in MID: <jd2hctFc3pnU1@mid.individual.net>

Messages on USENET have headers.

Using things like "header view" in a news agent, you
can see the lines in the beginning of the message, that
control and identify the message.

The MID or Message ID, is a unique identifier (no two alike)
that makes it possible to search for messages.

Go to this web site, as the person here has set up
a search engine, based on MID input.

http://al.howardknight.net/

When you enter a MID, you include the angle brackets around it.

<jd2hctFc3pnU1@mid.individual.net>

The search engine then takes you to the item in question.

http://al.howardknight.net/?ID=165125864500

Some USENET news clients accept direct MID input, for
vectoring to a particular message. But not every news client
has that capability, and that's where the Howard server comes in handy.
