If I didn’t have such info written down (electronically recorded), I wouldn’t remember anything! I’m now up to more than 650 notes in my phone and I’ve decided that the Notes function serves as my personal peripheral hard drive. I just can’t keep track of stuff in my brain anymore.

I found this article:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/25/science/hubble-telescope-vs-webb.html#:~:text=The%20Webb%20telescope%E2%80%99s%20primary%20mirror%20is%206.5%20meters,the%20ability%20to%20see%20further%20into%20the%20past.

Isn't it just a more high-tech telescope? I guess I don't get what goes into engineering that. AFAIK, no one well-known in the US economy has done any serious innovation lately, i.e., since the 1990s...the last big thing I remember was Google. Maybe Shor's algorithm was the biggest thing before that? It seems like it's been a lot of small-time computer programming things mostly...nothing really groundbreaking since computers got big I guess, not that I'm sure. Supercomputers? I can't think of anything truly great since Nash's breakthrough in the 1950's, maybe the TCS results relating to PTIME and NP-complete problems shortly after that. I think that might be why von Neumann is called the last great mathematician sometimes, it means at least for a while...Kurt Godel locked a lot universities into his logic/computing cage of sorts after what happened to Turing, I think. I doubt anyone other than me (and maybe my descendants) will crawl out any time soon!

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though, and to ignore specific sentences/etc. you'd rather not react to if you choose to reply.

It sounds like the real breakthrough was getting whatever funding for a sophisticated astronomy tool, exactly once. It doesn't sound that hard to engineer...what component of it was better? Circuits, software, some sort of magnification apparatus that was better than what came before? It sounds like just a really expensive telescope that no one bothered to pay to have built before.
