I had a Samsung network printer that I just replaced with a Brother
HL-L2370DW.

Once I send a print job, under "status" it just goes into the queue and
is listed as "hold".
If I release the hold, it still does not print but goes back to "hold"

It works fine on USB so I guess I'll just leave it like that.
(Fortunately the printer is in the same room as my Linux machines)

Curious why it does not work as Network on either Ubuntu 22.04 or Mint 21.2
The Samsung gave no problems.

Works fine as a network printer on both Win10 and 11

Yes and it installs normally.

When I send a print job, there are no error message.
Goes into the print queue and just sits there on hold.

When I release the hold, it immediately goes back into "hold"

In a web browser enter URL localhost:631 for the cups server web
interface and review the printer queue log for more detailed
information. That might point you to the issue.

Thank you.

It shows that additional drivers are needed and a dialog comes up "find
in software"

When I proceed, it says "no drivers available."

So it looks like this is a new printer which does not have full Linux
support yet. The previous printer was at least 12 years old.

Since it is working on USB, I think I can now put this obsession of mine
to rest.

I see printer drivers at Brother:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadend.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll2370dw_us&os=128&dlid=dlf103583_000&flang=4&type3=10283

HL-L2370DW(XL) Linux printer driver (deb package)

On another page, Brother has a driver install tool which says:
> The tool will install LPR, CUPSwrapper driver and scanner driver (for scanner models).

I have the same printer. I am using:

Brother HL-L2370DW series, driverless, cups-filters 1.28.17

You best option may be to download the drivers from Brother. I used to get
the cups/drivers combo. It seems different distros handle the drivers
differently.

Thanks but that one is older that the one already installed by default.
Brother seems to be about five years behind.

Now I see my printer is not a new design.

However this does not answer the question as to whether or not the older
drivers from Brother work, or not.

How many updates have messed up a working system?

OK,

I 100% uninstalled the printer and went directly to Brother's website
and downloaded the printer driver in a .deb package.

Same results, system sees and installs the network printer, but in
queue, it simply shows as pending...there is no printing.

On USB all fine

One thing though. In addition to the Linux printer driver, the website
also has a driver install tool in a .gz package

Is that something I also need to install?

If so, I can extract it, but I guess I need explicit instructions as
what to do next

Of course it does. You get the driver from https://support.brother.com

Hooray me, having an outdated list of articles. One thing to be _VERY_
cognizant of is whether or not CUPS is finding the mDNS advertisement of
the printer -- I've never had really good luck with any of my Brother
printers work with that while on WiFi (but they listen perfectly fine
when hitting them directly via IPP://printer.ip.here).

Yes.
The drivers I got directly from Brothers website.

Printer installs and is detected just fine.
Problem is. Any job sent to it is just listed as pending.
It does not print.

As mentioned, the driver works fine on USB

I have a laptop with Bodhi Linux that I tried.

It booted up and automatically installed the network printer and worked
fine.

I copied the configuration *exactly* to Mint Linux again but same problem.

Printer is installed fine and print job goes to it but it sits there in
queue as "pending"

Anyway, since it works with USB this is not a critical problem, just
more of curiosity

Did you ever run the diag instructions to the link I provided to debug
network printing?

<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#Network_printer>

You said you can ping the printer, but what was the other tests,
especially the SNMP info? see steps 8 & 9. Does a SNMP query find the
printer?

/usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp
sudo /usr/lib/cups/backend/dnssd

I have 2 network HP printers, here is the output of my two printers (I
split the two long line results for clarity):

jonathan@nomad:~$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp
network socket://192.168.57.12 "HP LaserJet 400 color M451nw" "HP
LaserJet 400 color M451nw"
"MFG:Hewlett-Packard;CMD:PJL,PML,PCLXL,URP,PCL,PDF,POSTSCRIPT;MDL:HP
LaserJet 400 color M451nw;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 400
color
M451nw;MEM:MEM=367MB;COMMENT:RES=600x8;LEDMDIS:USB#ff#04#01;CID:HPLJPDLV1;"
"Studio"

network socket://192.168.57.13 "HP LaserJet 2100 Series" "HP LaserJet
2100 Series" "MANUFACTURER:Hewlett-Packard;COMMAND
SET:PJL,MLC,PCL,PCLXL;MODEL:HP LaserJet 2100
Series;CLASS:PRINTER;DESCRIPTION:Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 2100 Series"
"Computer Closet"

If it is found, what does the log say in cups web interface?
localhost:631 > Printers

Is the network printer showing in the queue list? If so click it?
Post the displayed info

Go to the Jobs tab and look at the results. If there is not enough info
then go to the Administration tab and set the Advanced option 'Save
debugging information for troubleshooting'

I am not sure if the web interface automatically restarts cups but the
command will do it and show if it is successful

sudo systemctl restart cups; systemctl status cups

Clear your print queue jobs and then try printing again. Now check the
jobs in cups web interface and see if your can pinpoint the error.

Thanks for all the good advice.

I deleted the printer and started over

Got a cups server error server-error-internal-error

Log shows this RuntimeError: ppdOpenFile failed

Okay it says the associated ppd file for the printer is either corrupted
or missing. Printer ppd files are installed to /etc/cups/ppd directory

example:
ls -l /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd
-rw-r----- 1 root lp 160270 Mar 3 2023 /etc/cups/ppd/BP-50C26PCL_PS.ppd
-rw-r----- 1 root lp 102791 Aug 31 13:18
/etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_200_color_M251nw.ppd
-rw-r----- 1 root lp 19941 Jan 13 2023 /etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_2100.ppd
-rw-r----- 1 root lp 115781 Sep 11 2022
/etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_400_color_M451nw.ppd
-rw-r----- 1 root lp 10266 Mar 16 2021 /etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_400C.ppd

Try installing printer via the cups web interface:

localhost:631

Administration > Add Printer

Select printer from discovered network printers and for the driver use
what azigni suggested from list

My bad, I am using LMDE 6 Faye. I think I may have originally installed
Mint (Ubuntu version) and could not get my printer to work. After
searching around and not finding a solution I switched to LMDE.
