I am seriously much happier with Android 4 running on a 2012 Craig netbook
than my Android 11 phone, particularly how it handles scientific apps like
Jasymca, Addi, Maxima and R-console. However, I wonder how switching to an
older OS will affect phone service. Further, I wonder if it is possible to
maybe dualboot an entire Linux distro like Quantian on my phone.

I'd say "badly". The chances of a decade+ old operating system having
device drivers for a couple of year old phone, would as close to zero as
you can get.

And Google play fails to download most apps, because there are no
versions for that ancient system anymore.

At the risk of this being yet another Apple iKook troll, "downgrading"
Android would be no different than downgrading any other common consumer OS
in terms of the potential issues that you'd face with old apps running.

As for Linux, we've covered this in gory detail in the past that you can
easily load any Linux distro onto Android, which is something iOS can't do.

For example, look up andronix as just one solution for running distros.
<https://duckduckgo.com/?q=andronix+android+linux+distro>

Load this first, which works just fine without needing to be rooted.
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=studio.com.techriz.andronix>

Then choose almost any native Linux distro that your heart could desire.

HINT: Try that inside teh walled garden if you are an iKook troll.
