While the Taskbar and Start Menu Jump list are located in the user's
%appdata%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer folder line, it is my
understanding that the Office components (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, &c)
Pinned lists are located in the System Registry.

Anyone know the specific location where they exist? At times, those
lists are lost and I'd prefer to regedit-export those specific keys as a
file so I can easily restore them if they go missing in the future.

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband

There's a binary blob called "Favorites" in there. I don't have a quick way of
pasting that into a message :-/

*******

Since we know the keyword is Taskband now, we can find a Win7 example.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/214711-taskbar-pinned-items-reset-clear-windows-7-a.html

This tutorial shows both items that need backup. A .reg and a folder.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/212923-taskbar-backup-restore-pinned-items-windows-7-a.html

In the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband

In the hidden TaskBar folder:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

At a guess, the "folder" one, is for system ones or something, because MSEdge
is in there.

Thanks for the quick response. I regret that my post was unclear, I have
the been able to save both the Start Menu and Taskbar Jump lists but the
Microsoft Office (MSO) Pinned (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, &c) lists are
part of that branch. Note: It seems like MS refers to the pinned items
on Taskbar and Start Menu as "Jump lists" and those on Microsoft taskbar
component icons as "Pinned lists", as near as I can tell. The Pinned
lists are the list of accessed documents shown when one right-clicks the
MS Office component (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, &c) icon on the taskbar.

Those lists seem to be located in the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number*\Office
component**\

* e.g. 14.0 = Office 2010)
** Excel, Word, Powerpoint, &c

I'd *.reg-export each component branch but that includes other keys that
I'd not want to save. My WAG guess is that the Pinned list branch key is

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number*\Office
component**\File MRU
-or-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number*\Office
component**\Place MRU

I could start experimenting but if I'm wrong, recreating those Pinned
lists are a PITA and error prone so if someone knew for sure, I could
test that rather than my "shots in the woods" approach.

Thoughts?

2010 Does have a File>Recent menu option but it list all recent files,
not just the ones I pinned on the taskbar icons.

Note: MS still haunts my 2010 everytime I open a document warning me of
how unsafe it is, though :-)

Something related to the picture I see here ?

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/all/fixed-jump-list-recent-items-for-word-are/c7b2a6fa-a1d8-4070-b966-8d442b69c5aa

Similar example here, with option to pin to the jumplist showing.

There's a reference to an AutomaticDestinations here.

The picture example is similar but the loss of the items is either when
I do a restore or possibly when I do a registry clean. Either way, the
problem is self-inflicted. The linked image above is from my Excel
spreadsheet Pinned list but the names have been changed to protect the
innocent :-)

As one might imagine, reconstructing that list is a royal PITA;
especially so since I have to recall what the last state was by memory.

Maybe you could try "File History", to walk the folder back in time.

But I doubt that's a worthwhile option on Windows 7, as the implementation
differs from OS to OS on that. And the later versions may have worked better.

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

The files in there, one of them was 111 KB, suggesting the contents of
it was an entire list, rather than being a pointer to a single entry.
There are other files which are only 1 KB or so. It has that "Binary look" inside,
so could be a registry of some sort. Just a guess.

Maybe you can find a "forensics" web page with more info on the
format and contents. The forensics people like to "mine" files like
that for pointers.

Thanks, Paul. Yes, for the Start Menu and Quick Launch* Jump lists, they
are are actually found in folders as Shortcut files so they are easily
backed up and restored, see

%AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User
Pinned\StartMenu

%AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

*Quick Launch taskbar toolbar still works in Win7 (and Win10 last I
checked) I prefer it since it packs the launch icons closer together, as
can be seen on the desktop screenshot I linked to.

Unfortunately, MSO pinned items aren't saved in any drive folder but as
Registry sub-key entries. I think what I will do is export the sub-key I
believe holds the Pinned list, delete that sub-key, see if the Pinned
list is removed and the import the sub-key.reg file until I find one
that does that. (after doing a proper backup, of course)

If I can confirm it, I'll post back here.

btw, the reason I rely on the MSO component pinned list is because I
save my MSO component files, e.g. myFile.xlsx in many different folders
on my system that contain other files having to do with the subject of
the spreadsheet; rather than keeping them all in, say an, Excel folder.

heh, what my MSO version does is periodically add a small yellow bar
under the toolbar icons informing that my version of MSO is out of date
and no longer supported. The irony is that Microsoft no longer supports
Win7 MSO anyway :-)

While I was not able to find reliable folder or System Registry
locations for the MSO component Pinned Lists, I was able to accomplish a
means of backup that satisfies my needs. It's a bit tedious to create
for those with large numbers of pinned documents, though it was worth it
for me knowing I won't have to recall where they were all located the
next time Windows decides to clear them from MSO component taskbar
Pinned items.

Specifically, I simply did document-copies and then Pastes-shortcut in a
separate folders. That way, if the pinned list is lost, I can more
simply just open each document from the shortcut list to recreate the
Taskbar component Pinned Lists. This does require that I pay mind to
update the shortcut folder lists whenever I modify the taskbar items but
it's a small price to me, at least for me.

Cheers
