'Take a photo of the moon with a Samsung smartphone and it'll be
remarkably crisp and detailed. Turns out, though, that the company's
gadgets are faking it by slapping AI-aligned moon textures onto the shots.'

<https://boingboing.net/2023/03/15/samsung-faked-moon-photo-tech.html>

'Reddit user ibreakphotos demonstrated the shenanigan by deliberately
blurring a professional photo of the moon then taking a photo of the
blurry smear with a Samsung handset, thereby proving that it adds the
detail algorithmically.'

The details are all laid out here:

<https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/11nzrb0/samsung_space_zoom_moon_shots_are_fake_and_here/>

'The moon pictures from Samsung are fake. Samsung's marketing is
deceptive. It is adding detail where there is none (in this experiment,
it was intentionally removed).'

For other opinions on Samsung's moon photography processing & some of
the technical details, see these two Verge articles:

https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/14/23640006/samsung-s23-moon-photo-controversy-space-zoom-computational-photography

https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/15/23641069/samsung-fake-moon-controversy-english-language-blog-post

In the first, the case is made that the processing that Samsung is doing
for the moon is no different than what the iPhone does for face unblur
or food photos.

I posted about this on a photo NG and neglected to post it here.

Marques Brownlee did a short YT vid about it yesterday referring to the
reddit post.

Nope.

Not in the slightest.

I guess that's why you snipped all the text about how a blurred image of
the moon displayed on a screen across the room had detail added back
into it.

Your own theverge.com url says:

'Reddit user ibreakphotos simply snapped a photo of an artificially
blurred image of the Moon using a Samsung phone, which added in extra
detail that didn’t exist in the original.'

I bet you could do something similar with a plate with appropriately placed
stains or marks on it.

That would be a fun test.

The difference between posting facts on an adult ng versus on the iPhone
newsgroups is nobody on the adult newsgroups will care to defend Samsung.

Only on child-like Apple ngs do they defend their chosen God to the death.

On the adult newsgroups, posters' egos aren't intertwined with MARKETING BS

I've had 2 Samsung 27 inch LED monitors that were bought at the same time, had a manufacture date
within a week of each other. Both died, a week apart.
I had 2 Samsung spinner drives. Same thing happened.

Never again.

Alan Browne hasn't started a single thread about the yellow iPhone in

Sounds like a run of bad luck to me. Anything support those models are
particularly bad?

IAC the topic is more about Samsung "image enhancement" <cough> than
product quality.

The first post in the thread was from Alan.
I replied that I posted something similar in a photo NG - nothing to do

I think you're a bit confused over who posted what and where (and
probably why). Congrats: you got when nailed. I think.
