Being able to use an Android device as a high-quality webcam, via USB,
has been available for a long time. Glad to see that Apple has added
this feature to iOS 16 (for Mac only),

As cool as this feature may be, it's unwieldy to use a phone as a
webcam. If you're doing a lot of Zoom or Teams meetings then splurge for
a high quality webcam like the Anker PowerConf C300.

Of course when you're using your phone as a webcam you don't have it
available for other uses. When I'm on a Zoom meeting I'm constantly
getting texts from people regarding what is going on in the meeting and
making suggestions.

Nobody ever said Apple products don't work well only when inside the walled
garden but you cc'd an Android group (which is outside the walled garden).

then it means it won't work in the real world where people are not.

Of course another reason for using the iPhone as a Macbook camera has
been the low quality of the Macbook cameras.

I'd be surprised if Desk View is run on a remote server since the
latency would be unacceptable. Apple already suggests a USB connection
for Continuity Camera if there are issues with using it over Wi-Fi.
Certainly the compute power of an iPhone or Mac would be able to handle
this task.

Because this can work over Wi-Fi there has to be a way to ensure that
the iPhone camera is connecting to a Mac on the same account. There
could be multiple Macs and iPhones using the same Wi-Fi network.

It's the same thing if you want to use an iPad to answer phone calls
from an iPhone, it has to be logged into the same Apple account and it
has to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

What they could do is generate a link code, like what is done when
pairing Bluetooth devices, since both the Mac and the iPhone have a display.

If this was USB-only, like a normal external webcam, then there would be
no need to login.

except that continuity camera does not use usb.

apple's continuity camera connects *wirelessly*, and without the need
for manual configuration, something android does *not* have, and quite
possibly never will for various reasons.

sending and receiving texts can easily be done on the computer,
although there are much better methods of communicating out of band
during a video conference.

Well designed devices "pair" without needing to log into any account

What good is it if it only works when logged into an Apple server account.

Using your own words, something Android does is use its own camera without
having to be always held captive to Apple to share video feeds with a PC.
