Got my system back from the supplier recently. Although the information
under "Engineer Diagnostics" was quite sparse, it included the line "The
CPU was replaced and full testing completed with no issues". So, duff
CPU! I took the plunge and re-installed Mageia 8; since the restart, no
stability problems.

I have been reliably informed that it is NEVER the CPU --

This is the first case I've heard of where a faulty cpu only caused instability
rather then simply failing to boot. Makes sense, but has to be pretty rare.
Probably the old cpu would have been ok if the speed was forced to be lower in
the bios or uefi firmware settings and/or the voltages increased slightly.

I could be educational - with an old motherboard - just to try every
bios setting to extreme and see what happens

In the past, I used to overclock the cpu. As well as increasing the speed, the
voltage had to be increased for the maximum the cpu/mb combo would tolerate.

Finding that tolerance level was a matter of increasing the speed and voltage
to the max, and then decreasing first the cpu speed, then the voltage to find
the highest cpu speed that would work, and with the lowest voltage (to minimize
extra heat) that speed would work at.

I found, the cpu either booted, or it didn't. Never encountered a setting where it
booted, but was unstable. Doesn't surprise me, just never encountered it myself.

Regards, Dave Hodgins.

Many years ago I got adventurous and tried to compile a kernel.

The CPU got red hot and started stepping down the clock slower and slower.
So I tried lowering core voltage until the system failed to boot.

Haven't tried since. I have plenty of room for a larger kernel now
