The very-large CPU usage with MsMpEng I traced to recent software
installations.

1/ HWinFNO32/64
2/ Core-Temp-Setup-v1.18.1.0

I'd installed these to monitor CPU temperatures.

The MsMpEng has gone back to usual levels.

I use the same version of Core Temp on 4 different systems of mine,
though all are Win 10 and not 11. The highest the CPU usage shows in
Task Manager is 0.1%-0.2%. Usually it just sits thee at 0%.
I have it displaying all the cores temps, ram usage in %, and CPU load
in %. 2/4 of the systems use Defender. It's free and I really like it!

At one time(up until Win10 release era) I routinely ran Core Temp on two
of my devices running Windows 7. Once one was upgraded to Win10 the other
purchased with Win10, constant monitoring proved little benefit for my usage.
This device(running Win11 Pro with a reasonable compliment of software
but very little running at startup and normally less than 5 programs in
addition to Windows the temps operate in a very narrow low-end ranges.
CPU 38 C 107 F
GPU 42 C 115 F
SSD 35 C 101 F
HD 30 C 91 F

The CPU four cores on this device per Core Temp 1.81.0 range from 37-39 C
with Windows, Office 365 Outlook, Chrome, Edge, and iTunes running)
