I lost all desktop effects, particularly the virtual desktop switching
with the screen edge triggering. I could still use the pager.

{I have no idea how the Windows folk manage with one desktop}

Resetting "Desktop effects > screen settings" did not recover
The clue was that the "junk user was unaffected. ( Thanks to Bit Twister )

After a process of elimination I narrowed it down to two files

~/.config

kwinrc
kwinrulesrc

Kwinrulesrc doesn't exist in the new ~/.config folder.
But I have my desktops back now and I am stopping the hunt.

Just as a heads-up, the KDE developers have, in their infinite wisdom,
decided to, for the upcoming 25th anniversary release of Plasma, drop
the spinning cube effect, as well as the switching between desktops by
way of the cube effect, and possibly one or two other effects "because
they would need to be rewritten to match the new scene" [whatever that
is] "and almost nobody uses them anyway" and because "they don't belong
on a modern desktop". (Read: they themselves don't use it, and they
don't care whether someone else does.)

Also, again stemming from their infinite wisdom, they've decided to
disable translucency by default because of something to do with the
translucency of moving windows.

Maybe they've taken a few attitude lessons from the GNOME developers...

I remember reading that KDE and Gnome had a joint conference
to iron our some problems. Maybe keeping up with the programming of
spectacular effects was one of the problems.

As for switching desktops I think a pager is wonderful.
We had multiple screens as far back as the Amiga with certain programs
generating their own screens and being able to flip between screens.
The desktop there was called "Workbench". Virtual Desktops are better
I think than most screens were. Also the Graphics are much finer grained.

Way back I ran the cube effect and the cylinder but I settled on the
grid view switched with the top screen edge
I just shove the mouse to the top, all four desktops appear and I can
chose.

When it failed yesterday I was seriously inconvenienced changing desktops.

"and almost nobody uses them anyway" may be correct. I tried them for
their novelty value but settled on the grid. Speedy and effective, I can
jump around from desktop to desktop. I have noticed that the scroll
wheel switching has been disabled with my arrangement, although it still
appears as an option in "Mouse Actions".

Oh NO!! You're are a better girl than me, Bobbie.

I was stuck temporarily with the pager and found it infuriating. It's
too small to hit accurately quickly
So glad to have my edge trigger back

Why is your pager so small?

|__| 1
|__| 2
|__| 3
|__| 4

Above is about a half size ASCII representation of my pager.
Number 1-4 from top to bottom on vertical task bar with a few other
items on it.

I have a horizontal task bar across 90% of the top of the page and on
the Left side the pager with some other items, such as a menu
icon/widget, Luna, simple calculator, konsole, KWrite, KPatience,
KMahjongg and Lock & Leave. It takes about 2/3 of the vertical height
Top bar is 56 Pixels high and the left side is 64 pixels wide.
1920 x 1080 14 inch display.

This is a faint echo of my Old Amiga Workbench as I had multiple
menus on top and a primitive task bar on the side (forgot the names of
the addons in terms of menu and task bar). One was shareware and the
other for the menus was aspiring to be shareware.

But that is all wasted verbiage as you are happy with your
edge effect. KDE can look like any other Desktop Environment or like
no other desktop. Whee!

I have the grid view trigger on the left edge -- I have a panel at the
top, with (among other things) the global menu, and I have a slightly
thicker but short dock-like panel at the bottom.

The right edge triggers the "Present Windows (current desktop)" effect.
The bottom left corner triggers the full cube -- actually, I call it
"the carousel" because I have twelve virtual desktops, so it's not
quite a cube anymore-- and the right bottom corner triggers the "Show
Desktop" effect.

Well, yes, but I do use the cube effect when switching between
desktops, in the sense that when I switch to another desktop, the one I
was on rotates away and the new one rotates in place. This to me is a
visual clue that I've switched to another desktop. I don't like the
sliding or fading effect for that.

I even use the same rotating effect for switching between the different
home screens on my Android phone, and to myself, this effect perfectly
materializes the "virtual desktop" metaphor, in that it feels like I'm
switching over to another graphical terminal.

> I have noticed that the scroll wheel switching has been disabled with

I think that was a bug in the handling of the scroll wheel. There were
people complaining about it on the Manjaro forum as well. But
personally, I always disable that.

I do however often switch between virtual desktops by scrolling over the
pager. Likewise, it's how I switch between activities as well -- I have
an activity pager on the panel too, with two activities.

Ah Ha! My afterthought was that you probably had something a little
better that the standard pager on the default task bar, which is about
half the size of a desktop icon - the pager not the task bar.

I have experimented with task bar in various locations but still go back
to the screen bottom and set it default narrow/height

I never had the experience of the Amiga. I look back in some sorrow.

I do read their monthly magazine. The editor seems to be a one man

The best of all worlds then.

So if they deprecate the "Cube", as you say, it will break your heart.

I had idea that the Android had a cube effect. Well Well!!!

Yep. :)

Yes, it will. It was one of those cool features that Plasma had and
that you couldn't get on other desktop environments without using
Compiz as a drop-in window manager replacement.

My phone has Android 8 on it, so from at least as early as version 8 on,
it'll be there, yes. It's not the default setting however; the default
is for the screens to slide.

Typo!! I had NO idea that there was a cube effect for Android.
How is it accessed

I know about the right left sweep to access the second first desktop
and I think more desktops can be added but I haven't gone there since I
first set up the phone. I didn't realize that there was anything
remotely fancy to switch between them.

I must start poking around.

Well, it's in the options somewhere. I only discovered it by accident
myself, because my previous Android phone -- granted, that one's
already old -- didn't have that effect.

Yeo! I am having the vague flashback memories - always despairingly
and uselessly vague

I do remember - eventually - long ago pinching the home screen would
cause thumbnails to appear for each desktop/screen and a plus "+"
button to add more.

Pinching the Android 10 screen causes a little navigation panel
Wallpaper widgets and Settings

Settings offers Transition effects
Slide Crossfade Tumble and Page

None of them particularly catchy. All quite similar in operation and
appearance. Probably easier to code than a cube and memory space
considerations apply

Maybe they talked to the Plasma guys and decided on global elimination
of the cube

A great pity! It was catchy

Mediocrity rules.

I think it's the "tumble" effect. Not sure anymore, plus that my phone
is set up in Dutch -- I bought it through my carrier.

Android 10 has been "improved"
To create a new home screen, don't pinch, just drag an icon to the right
edge. A new screen will be created

Clearly something I did
I just lost the desktop effects a few minutes ago
I checked the "kwinrc" file to find that it had been modified created
and accessed today. a few moment ago

I deleted it and ran through the desktop effects setup and all was well.
It's nice to have localized the problem previously to effect a swift
solution. I'm glad I looked into it earlier on.

For future reference, make a backup of the file.

$ cd ~/.config && cp kwinrc kwinrc.backup
