Hi all...

strange question maybe but better safe than sorry...

after updating I get the message e.g.

The following packages:
kernel-desktop-5.10.20-2.mga8-1-1.mga8.x86_64
...<SNIP>
lib64magick-7Q16HDRI_8-7.0.10.57-1.mga8.tainted.x86_64
are now orphaned, if you wish to remove them, you can use "urpme --auto-
orphans"

Is it safe to just remove them without some checking of any sort?

I am no expert but I remember in the past that removing pakages could
create - if I remember well- 'dependancy problems'...
TIA
santo

See https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Removing_packages#Warning first. Then, once it's
clear run "urpme --auto-orphans --test", which will not actually remove any
packages, whether the prompt is answered Y or N.

Review the list of packages. If you see any -task packages or packages you know
you don't want deleted you know you'll have to be selective about which packages
you want removed, and manually remove each of the ones you don't want using urpme,
or rpmdrake.

If you don't see any task- or packages you want to keep, go ahead and run
"uprme --auto-orphans" and reply Y.

I keep one or two of the most recently installed kernels, just in case
something goes wrong with a new kernel.

I also copy-paste the list of packages suggested for urpme --auto-orphans
into a file and remove only those I am confident I will not need. I do
have lots of disk space so space for unneeded software and backups of it
are of no concern.

Dave Hodgins' recommendation is another slightly different approach.

Cheers!
