I just got VT103 which I'm trying to connect to a VAXstation 90A. I have remove all backplane cards except for the terminal controller and attached STP (Standard Terminal Port) connector. (Cabel J1 and J2 are not connected to anything).
I plug-in the console cable into the EIA communication port (25 pin). I SETUP the VT103 to match the communication on the VAX console port i.e. 9600B, 8-N-1. But cannot get it to work.
However when using the same cable and connector and plug-in it to a PC com running a terminal emulator 9600B, 8-N-1. it work nicely.

Can the VT103 be used as a dumb terminal? Have I missed something obvious?

Do you have the baud rate configured correctly? Number of stop bits?
Is it configured to require RTS/CTS or is it just using Tx/RX/GND?

Sorry for being a bit OT. I actually figured out after reading the VT100 LS-11 Users Guide. If you would like to use the VT103 as a dumb terminal you have to remove the STP (standard terminal port) adapter from the Terminal Controller card. If the STP is installer it assumes a second terminal device and the EIA comm port is used for "external" comm.
