Are there specific newsgroups for Windows 10 and 11? I've been using Windows 7 but recently bought a
Windows 10 computer. I searched at news.eternal-september.org but couldn't find anything.

Yes, both there, but you may have to refresh your newsgroup list to see
them.

The newer Thunderbirds refresh the hostinfo.dat when you attempt
to change a subscription in the list. Older ones required manual
operation of the refresh function.

The subscription file (.rc) can be manually edited (Notepad). Thunderbird
will download messages to fluff up the numbers (concept of low_water
and high_water message numbers). Using "1-1" forces it to reload.
I was even hand-editing like this on xvnews (SunOS client).

news.eternal-september.org.rc

alt.comp.os.windows-10: 1-1
alt.comp.os.windows-11: 1-1

Once you pull in headers and mark the newsgroup read, it would look like this (roughly).

alt.comp.os.windows-10: 1-166671
alt.comp.os.windows-11: 1-4692

Not that any of this is absolutely necessary, but it never
hurts to know where the adjustments are. For example, if your
computer has bad RAM and continually ruins .msf files using
the bad RAM, you'll likely be doing repairs "a lot" in there :-)
Since I got the new computer with DDR4 RAM, I've never had to
touch a thing in there. Now, it just works. Who knew.

Thank you, everyone! In my search, I hadn't put a hyphen between windows and 10 or 11. Once I did
that, I found them.

Windows 6.x?

I never knew there was such a thing.

https://osm.fandom.com/wiki/Windows_NT_6.1

Windows NT 6.1, codenamed Hinton, was an OS made by Microsoft that was
released on February 9, 2008 and ended support on January 14, 2020,
granted that the Terminal Server & Embedded versions will receive paid
updates until September 4, 2023. It's the next NT version after
Windows NT 6.0 and Windows NT 6.05 and the predecessor to Windows NT
6.2. It was reissued on 10/22/2009 under the names under the names
Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

Well, '6.1' is what you get when you give a 'ver' command on Windows
7. It's the 'NT-version', not the Windows version. Simply put, the
'NT-version' is the version of the kernel, not of the whole Windows
system.

For Windows 8, it's '6.2' and for Windows 8.1, it's '6.3'. (See for
example the '6.3' in my 'User-Agent:' header.)

For all the NT-versions, see the 'Version' column in:

Releases
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT#Releases>

Note that for Windows 10, the NT-version is 10.0, i.e. NT-version
equals Windows version, but for Windows 11, it's also 10.0, because, as
has been recently mentioned in one of the Windows newsgroups, Windows 10
and 11 share the same kernel.

You just gave me a massive headache with all that.

Those numbers are used in places like installers and the like,
for "policing" whether a "thing" can be installed in a particular
OS. The numbers are shorter than using a textual descriptor
of some sort.

Windows 10 is a rolling release, so it makes sense
that the Windows 11 checkpoint edition, will share the
identifier numbers with its parent. Microsoft would need
to build two office rooms, put Win10 employees in one room,
put Win11 employees in another room, if it had elected
to assign different numbers. Now, they all sit in the same pram
and throw their toys out occasionally (which is why the LCD monitor
won't accept the ICM file right now in Windows 11).

That Microsoft *has* a release control system is somewhat of
a miracle. You will remember a time when Bill Gates would
have you distinguish between two DLLs, merely by their "byte count".
"You want the one with 12345 bytes, not the one with 12346 bytes."
That's how they used to do it. They did not even use checksums
to tell them apart, just byte count.

On some of the early pre-release versions of Windows 10, the internal
version number was given as 6.4.
