The newsgroup has gone ominously silent
It's not my end; I've checked "alt.test"

I wonder is it something to do with

-No more Linux problems (a miracle has occurred)

-Covid

-Putin

-something else

Likely Putin. I've kept up doing things like adding advisories to svn, and reading
the mailing lists, but have been spending quite a bit of time following the invasion

I wondered if it is not a good time to invade anyone in Europe
temperatures in Ukraine are hovering around zero.

It least the mud stays frozen and maybe Putin wont be repeating the Nazi
invasion of Russia. That would be poetic

I am currently embroiled with Handbrake re-enabled "autocrop"
I only discovered this after processing several hours of TV stream.
It pales into insignificance against the Ukraine disaster, though

For me it is that "something else", I've only very occasionally been
active here, after trying to catch up with the mailing lists there was
only too rarely time to post here. And now that XS4ALL is more or less
dying and is completely ending its usenet support, I doubt I'll take an
account somewhere else. My new ISP doesn't intend to enable access to
news groups.

Anyway, good luck to you all!

Kind regards,
Marja

news.eternal-september.org is completely free of charge, Marja. You do
have to register for an account at their website but registration is
free, and access is unlimited, except that they don't support binaries.

The server is located in Germany, and they offer a number of freely
accessible newsgroups — i.e. that you can read and post to without
logging in — for support.

https://www.eternal-september.org

You use the SMTP of your ISP for sending, and a news client of your
preference for reading. They support both encrypted and non-encrypted
connections. All of the details are provided on their website. ;)

The soil is frozen hard enough to support tanks. War in Winter is how
the USSR beat the NAZI in WW II. But then aside from the anti-semites
the Ukraine was on the same side.
Putin assumed that he could crush the opposition in one bold
stroke and failed to plan for an extended war. This is logistic mistake
equivalent to the Hitlerian Armies failure. Putin is a Fascist and
follows their errors to the letter.

Marja,

I'm reading this newsgroup on news.kpn.nl, so they still support usenet
groups.

All the best,

I always like the observation about failure to study history condemns
one to repeat it.

I'm sure some of his advisors have tried. But there exists some
situations where it is inadvisable to suggest that the fearless leader
may be wrong. :-[

The big difference of course is that Hitler didn't possess any nukes.
Putin does, and he won't have a qualm using them either. He's the kind
of guy who would rather go out in a ball of fire than to admit defeat.

He's already using cluster bombs and thermobaric bombs right now, and
the Chernobyl installation was the first thing the Russian military
took control of after the invasion. Brief radiation spikes were
detected as they were doing so. It's not unthinkable that Putin
decided to make Chernobyl into the world's biggest dirty bomb, just in
case.

0C is melting weather, ang the soil of the Ukraine can turn into gumbo
making driving of trucks/tanks etc across fields an exercise in
futility, as the Germans ( and earlier invasions) discovered. I believe
that was what was being referred to.

What it feels like is less important than whether tanks and other
heavy/armored vehicles can propel themselves across the land without
getting stuck.

Russian troops are commonly used to very low temperatures. They
themselves won't have any problems with that.

If the average ambient temperature is 0°C, then the soil will still be
several degrees Celsius colder than that — anywhere from -2°C to -10°C,
depending on whether it's exposed to direct sunlight or whether it's
cloudy and perhaps if there's a shade. Not quite at the thawing point
yet.

If it's 0°C on the ground, then the ambient temperature will commonly
already be around 4-5°C, and then you do of course get a thaw, and thus
a muck on the ground.
