Over the years using EBD with ES File Explorer on a tablet I have been
able to read a book from the sdcard either directly with EBD or via
ESFE. Now, using CxFE the books have somehow been marked so that I
can't access them directly with EBD but am required to go through CxFE.
This is a nuisance because I can order the books under EBD by most
recently active, whereas CxFE orders the books by creation date.

[ Aside: One day ESFE completely disappeared from my phone, along with
the shortcuts I had made for transferring files between the phone and my
computer. Can the NSA reach in to unpassworded phones and tweak? I
know that ESFE has evil tendencies, but it worked really well. ]

If I go back and use ESFE EBD still demands that I go through CxFE.
This is absolutely maddening. The author of EBD seems to be no longer
answering questions (he used to be really good about it) and the CxFE
author says 'not my problem' -- he can't install EBD (or just doesn't
want to) and can't reproduce the problem.

Reinstalled CxFE and possibly EBD. No joy. Any chance there might be a
secret index somewhere or some mark placed in each file?

Any ideas?

Addendum: A while back I seem to remember that Android did something
that prevented other programs from accessing the subdirectories that a
program used to store its data (or whatever). Changing the permissions
on the individual book files made no change. Is it possible that CxFE
has laid claim to the entire SDcard because that's where the books are
stored? Deleting CxFE made no change. Is there any way to force control
to be released?

If I understand your issue correctly, the problem you are having is that
the default for reading your Ebooks has changed to the wrong app.

The settings for app defaults for different file type are stored in your
phone's launcher data and aren't reset when the app is
uninstalled/reinstalled. To resolve the issue, you need to clear the
default settings for the wrong app. The way to do this varies depending
on the phone.

On my Samsung Galaxy, I go to Settings > Apps > select the "wrong" app >
Set as default > Clear defaults. Note that this clears the defaults for
all file types handled by this "wrong" app, so if you had other file
types handled by this app, you will also need to re-associate those.

The next time you attempt to open your Ebook file, your launcher should
give you a choice of which app to use. Select the correct app. You can
click on Always to always use that app from that point.

Hope this fixes your issue.

Thanks, but no joy. I think I had done that before. This time I
revoked its STORAGE permissions -- it now has NO permissions that I
could see. Even so, trying to read a book directly with EBookDroid
resulted, as usual, in this error message:

"Can not open book. This book was deleted or Cx File Explorer
application revoked read permission. Please reopen this book through Cx
File Explorer application. Do not worry settings, notes and bookmarks
for this file are preserved."

There was NO comma after 'worry' in the text. Not my typo :-)

This appears even though the app had been deleted. MOREOVER when you
follow the instructions you have to see an ad before you get to the
actual book. Hubby's review is the only one so far, with no response
from the author.

Solution: Termination with extreme prejudice. Factory reset and DO NOT
INSTALL CxFE. Use ES File Explorer just like always. "Clickfraud" is
NOT my problem.

Selecting and installing apps from non-playstore sources used to be
SOOOO easy, but Android 12 has made this a painful chore. My Pixel2
(Android 11) just sucked in everything from my Motorola phone (looked
like a miracle; still does) and I haven't wanted to install any
non-playstore stuff yet. Not looking forward to it.

A curious thing: I had been using ES File Explorer for years on several
different phones and tablets. Several months ago it completely
disappeared from my Pixel2 along with the shortcuts it had created.
That's why I put Cx on my phone. Now I'm worried because I'd rather
open a vein in a warm bath than do a factory reset on my phone.

Addendum: The playstore's review system sucks badly. When I went to
the site with my computer I selected 1-star reviews. Hundreds, perhaps,
not sorted by date and not searchable. Gave up trying to find hubby's.

Configuring new Android 12 tablet. Just getting firefox to work
properly is a chore, and I have yet to be able to insert the adblock
plus add-on. Apparently it's no longer supplied by firefox/android, and
downloading it from some other source presents an 'open with' problem --
Firefox isn't offered. Apparently this is an ES File Explorer problem.

I don't think I'm going to add as much stuff to this one as to previous
tablets. It's faster, of course, but the 'security' limitations (along
with limited config options) imposed by new apps are ridiculous.

Everything (almost!) is so EASY on the computer. The limitations of
phone and tablet are daunting and it bothers me that people are willing
to limit themselves this severely. It's frightening, in fact. No
wonder we see so much stupid stuff being said/written/done.

And now ES File Explorer seems to be exhibiting undesirable characteristics.

Once you use App Finder's search mechanism to find apps on the Google Play
Store repository, you'll never put up with Google's crappy search again.
<https://i.postimg.cc/L5QtFFYb/afp11.jpg> Check out the filters!

Nobody has enough time to waste on the Google Play Store app search engine.

In my humble opinion, it's one of the top half dozen Android apps extent.
