Yesterday I had a major (automatic) update on my Win 10 Home (kernel
10.0.19042.1052). It shows up as BK5003637. It took ages. For a while I
thought the OS was being updated to 21H1.

Nope. 20H2 still. However some ugly (uninvited) apps appeared on my
taskbar. E.g. a MS summary weather/news/shit, straight from Seattle.
When will they learn?

To get control of it, right-click Taskbar, click 'News and interests',
select your choice.

The control for it was placed in the TaskBar menu,
so that the user could turn it off and turn it on again.
If the control had been placed in a right-click menu
on the icon itself, there'd be no way to turn it on
again.

There are two states:

1) On/Off control via TaskBar menu. This controls
the visibility.

2) GPEDIT policy to remove it completely. When
removed, it will no longer be a menu item in
the TaskBar menu.

The item is a privacy violation.

It uses a locator which accurately locates you.

There is no privacy control for it in the Apps section
(I could not find an entry for it).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Feeds

EnableFeeds DWORD 0 = Disable
1 = Enable

Since the second one looks closer to (2)-like behavior, it
might be the one to use. It's possible the ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode
represents Icons+Text, Text Only, or Disable.

Thank you Paul. The tenforums solution worked a treat. I appreciate your

I got the 21H1 Upgrade a few days ago. I think the 21H2 update took
longer to install, the upgrade was very fast.

Are you referring to the Patch Tuesday security patch that
just came in, as 21H2 ?

21H2 should be later this year, like maybe October.

The arrival of 21H1, at least in the past, that would
reset the patchlist. The patchlist may give you some
idea of the timing.
