Hi there,

I have been struggling to find 4MB modules for my machines/adapters...
I have a model 50Z and a 55SX and a couple of Kingston KTM-609/16 and wanted to get some 4MB to complete the allowed 16MB on them.

As far as I could find only these are compatible...

IBM 4MB 79F1003 85ns
IBM 4MB 87F9980 80ns
and
Kingston KTM-4000/M70 P/N 34F2933 93F5794 4MB

Unfortunately, they have been quite difficult to find...

I found two similar ones on e-bay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274082998279
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274774611332

Would any of these potentially work?

Thanks a lot for the help.

I found two similar ones on e-bay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274082998279
The "E" on the label indicates ECC, so incompatible.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274774611332
1Mx40(bit) also indicates ECC, but incompatible with *any* PS/2, which use 39-bit ECC where supported.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284239723957
The example picture shows tin contacts and 8 chips (implying Non-Parity), but the 1Mx36(-bit) description properly indicates Parity SIMMs. PD coding is unknown and I'd ask about gold-plated contacts (for preference) and R1-R4 solder points for faking the PD coding, plus the chips' *actual* access time (<=80ns) before buying.

Thanks a lot for the detailed info.
Does it matter if it is double-sided or single-sided?
I found this one...
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284258515327

Would it be OK?

Thanks a lot!

Single-sided is usual for 4MB size, although there may be 4 lower-capacity Parity chips on the reverse of some designs.

NO! "Non-Parity" and "EDO" (Extended Data Out) are definite No-Nos as descriptors.

Although eBay has become shark-infested waters, especially for U.S.-based greed mongers, shipping costs and import duties, look at these 70ns gold parity SIMMs. They have all 4 resistor spots, so adding a bridge to the missing place would change it from 70ns PD (FRU 92F0105) to 80ns PD (FRU 92F3337):

Hi,

Maybe these tables will help:

http://ps-2.kev009.com/eprmhtml/eprm/f232.htm

Your 4MB modules are not mentioned for your 50Z or 55SX.

Jelte, the 55SX should support 4MB 80ns Parity SIMMs
Right Table - Entry 15

Hi Tim,

True. Also true: the modules Fernando mentioned are not among them:

> As far as I could find only these are compatible...
>
> IBM 4MB 79F1003 85ns ==> entry 09 only for PS/1 and 8543 LAPTOP (same PD as entry 15 though!)

according to https://eprm.ardent-tool.com/eprmx/12545.htm

partno 87F9977 corresponds to FRU 87F9980 and

partno 87F9977 is listed at entry 15 as Opt P/N.

So I guess that leaves:
79F1003 : not usable for 50Z and 55SX
87F9977 : only usable for 55SX

To my knowledge, IBM never marketed a 4MB 85ns Parity SIMM, at least not for the PS/2 range.

eBay descriptions often use IBM, PS/2 etc. keywords indiscriminately for *any old* 72-pin SIMM. 32-bit, Non-Parity, EDO and/or ECC keywords being warnings against them (except for the few Models that support 39-bit ECC SIMMs, 40-bit being exclusively used in RS/6000s) tin-plated contacts likewise. Many other or later IBM systems have used different RAM requirements, and with the multiple P/Ns (MKT, OPT, FRU etc.) for each, the potential number of different keywords becomes difficult to search for or eliminate.

How about this one:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184112084193

These memory specs are quite confusing.
I can't believe how hard it is to find something that would fit and how specific the requirement is for each machine.

Thanks a lot.

Well, it's a TALL SIMM and the PD coding is incorrect (bridge PD3 to correct).

Better something like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333914156678
The chips are 70ns, but the PD coding is correct for a PS/2 4MB 80ns SIMM.
