I think, in one of my last upgrades xdvi began to show blur fonts,
like so called "antialiased". I like sharp fonts, to see pixels
is better than the blur of antialiased.

I use normal (plain) TeX for generating the dvi. Normal crm fonts.

Perhaps has someone here a hint for me?

Thanks
Rod.

xdvi -nogrey file.dvi

Has no antialiasing, but the quality is very poor, the horizontal
line of a letter e for example disappears.

No idea what to do!

Hi,

have you tried pressing "V" to toggle between the x11 and x11alpha
(aliasing) driver? Here is the relevant text from the manual:

-gsalpha
(.gsAlpha) Causes Ghostscript to be called with
the x11alpha
driver instead of the x11 driver. The x11alpha
driver enables
anti-aliasing in PostScript specials, for a nicer
appearance.
It is available on newer versions of Ghostscript.
This option
can also be toggled with the `V' keystroke.

Just guessing---I haven't used Xdvi for a long, long time---but
could it be a Ghostscript or font creation related problem?

Yes. That do not help. Pressing G is like -nogrey, disable antialiasing,
but the quality of the fonts is so terrible, that it is not better.

After applying dvips and viewing with gv "-noantialia"s, I get better
quality, but I like xdvi, gv has too much latency.

In general viewing with not antialiased is poor, but with some fonts
is excellent. I do not remember having this problem before.

I oversaw this. No, it is not ghostscript related, becausause xdvi do not
use it. gv use it, but as said, after converting the same file to
postscript and viewing with gv (that use the same fonts), the quality is
OK. Hence also not font creation related.

Is there a particular reason to require DVI?

Or rather why can't you use luatex?

What do I win with luatex? PDF files like pdftex?

Yes, there is a reason to use dvi: it is leightweight, no delay loading,
fast reload ...

I do not see why. LuaTeX will use the same fonts, create the same
dvi or pdf, and the problems will be the same.
